I've been scouting local ad listings on the off-chance of scoping out a good bargain, and I've got to say, the levels to which the PS2's back catalogue goes unexplored by the average gamer is extremely noticeable. It goes to support the whole DVD tipping point notion. I mean, ninety percent of the games I find are sport/wrestling ports, and that's most folks' entire collection, occasionally a GTA in there sometimes too for variety. Considering the PS2's reputation as 'the' platform to develop for, it irks me slightly, as a gamer, how neglected its finer offerings go sometimes.

Unfortunately, not much has changed. I'm sure the majority of a 360 gamer's collection consists of Madden (insert year), Call of Duty (insert year), and Halo.

Wii is along the lines of Mario something, Just Dance, and some fitness game.

PS3 is probably similar to the 360 as well. It is just how it goes, most "mainstream" gamers prefer sports games, Call of Duty, and some other FPS. Of course, there isn't anything wrong with that and I'm not going to be some elitist gamer, but unfortunately that is how it goes. The movie and music industry suffer from the same problem as well.

Agree, there are a lot of annual redundant remakes of Sports games. There are always tons of them being sold used, because no body wants the previous years versions.

However, PS2 has one of the largest selection of games, PAL region is similar:

It's nearly always been this way. Go look at peoples Genesis collection's from way back. Sonic, possibly another game or two. Then Madden.

The best thing you can do though is when Mr. Joe Average gamer shows up to your house and comments on your games and possibly points out one he finds "stupid" sit him down and let him play some games that aren't your average run of the mill Call of Madden 68 SE types.

And don't forget the obligatory Shaq Fu, plus a basketball game.

A lot of my family was like this. 2 or 3 Madden games, GTA3, and maybe a Guitar hero game. Most used it as their primary DVD player (my bro-in-law still does).

I remember going over to their house several years after he got it and asked if they had any new games. He showed me Madden 03 (this was in 2005 or 2006), LOL.

The average "videogamer" isn't really a videogamer at all.

This might be true, but it's also something no one cares about.

Speaking for myself, I feel a little silly labeling myself as a "gamer". It's not something that defines me and being a good "gamer" is the lesser of my priorities. Just like being a good reader is not a priority for me anymore (it used to be a few years ago, when I felt I had to read everything I came across, all the classics, get acquanted with the "most important" stuff out there; then I realized I had read a lot, more than enough, and that I didn't care about it so much after all).

Nowadays I just play whatever I feel like and that's it. If that doesn't grant me a pass to the gamers club, that's fine.

I feel similar. Whenever I find I game I want on a good sale my reaction is "YES! FINALLY!"

But whenever I see a good game I already have "Ah, now that's just a damn shame. How come nobody has bought this yet?"

I also have a hard time finding games I want that begin with the letter "N" because that's the sports section (NHL, NFL, NBA, Nascar) and my eyes usually gloss over when I get to that point.

Props to whoever mentioned Soldier of Fortune a few pages ago. It was by no means the best game ever but it was still pretty fun. I can still remember the look on my moms face when I showed her how you could blow every limb off a dead body.

Now back to the PS2 nut swinging. I have probably played it more then any other system I have owned. I am 34 and have owned almost every game system since pong. I have two funny stories just about the launch of it.

The summer it came out I had a job I was making a ton of money at but absolutely hated. I was crane setting two piece modular homes and working 12-16 hour days 6-7 days a week. The park we were setting up was about a two hour drive away so I wouldn't even go home for a week or two at a time. We would just sleep in a empty house.

My monthly bills were almost nothing at the time and I worked so much I didn't have time to spend any money. I hated the boss so I couldn't wait to quit. As much as I hated him and the job I made a lot of money so I figured I should be respectful enough to give two weeks notice.

When the boss asked me why I was giving my notice I told him PS2 was coming out in two weeks. He then asked me what the hell PS2 was so I explained it to him. Then he wanted to know what that has to do with me leaving. I told him that I had saved up enough money to pay my bills for about a year and I planned on doing nothing but playing PS2 for at least a month. He didn't even talk to me again for those last two weeks.

My second story involves launch day. I prepaid for my system along with almost every accessory and launch game a month ahead of time. The guy at Babbage's was giving me a funny look when I was telling him everything I wanted to reserve. He started to get snotty with me and wanted to know if I had enough money for the deposits before he added anything else to my preorders. I pulled out $1,500 and told him I had planned on paying for everything right now.

So launch day finally comes. It's a midnight launch which was kind of rare back then. At least for the area I lived in. It was actually my first midnight launch as well. My friend Jason decides to go with me. He probably played games the least out of all my friends but I think he just wanted to go so he could laugh at me when I danced around and possibly wet my pants when I finally get it in my hands.

It was the longest day ever waiting for midnight. We pull up to the mall around 11 and the parking lot is empty. I am pretty surprised we are the first ones there. I proceed to tell Jason that I am the coolest motherfucker ever because I am getting mine first. He doesn't seem to care and just wants to know where the joint I rolled is.

So about a half hour goes by and we see two or three different cars cruise through the parking lot but no one stops. Now it's almost midnight and no one else has showed up yet. I am starting to get a little worried and Jason has been talking shit for the last 10 minutes. I go walking up at midnight to see if anyone is going to come let me in and a security guard comes rolling up right as I get to the front doors.

He wants to know what we are doing so I tell him I am here for the midnight launch. The security guard starts laughing at me. I ask him what is so funny thinking he is just laughing at me because I play video games. "Man that was last night"

I didn't believe him. I asked him to quit goofing around and let me know which entrance they were letting people in at. It was a pretty big mall and we were pretty stoned so I thought maybe we were in the wrong parking lot and everyone was at one of the other entrances. I am starting to get pissed thinking I am going to be at the back of the line now.

"Seriously dude. That was last night"

Bullshit. I pull out my receipt to show him.

"Look it says right on my receipt be here for the midnight launch October 26"

"Yeah that was last night. It midnight so now it's the 27th. Seriously man, go home, it was last night"

I was almost in tears. (In Jason's version of the story I was crying but he is full of shit) Needless to say it was a pretty shitty ride home.
