Have bought a few systems near launch but never on launch date itself.
For me though that will change when the 3DS is launched here on the 25th of this month.
I attended a type of pre-launch party in the Joburg area this past Friday and managed to get some time with one of the 3DS demo units that they were showing off.
I was a little skeptical beforehand but after trying out one of these units, I'm totally sold. And of course it didn't harm matters that the female models parading around with the 3DS's, were of the extremely hot variety. :D

None. Every system I get has been in the market at least one year, so the price/hype can come down, and so early problems are fixed.

I had the US Dreamcast preordered (in full) almost a full year before launch in 1999, and the midnight launch is one of my favorite gaming memories.

I took two of my friends (with Double Gulps) on a car trip all the way from our college campus to my hometown mall. The line ended up being all the way out to the mall into the parking lot, but I showed up early and was one of the first there. Everyone on line was cool and positive about gaming- a far cry from the console dogmatists and other douchebags you usually encounter in groups of gamers. Mall security kicked my friends out of the mall for sitting in the display bathtubs for a home remodeling kiosk, which was funny (if you were there). The whole launch was fun and everyone was positive and excited- just like the Dreamcast itself.

The DC is my all-time favorite console, and I sometimes wonder if it's because of the good experience I had on launch night.

I don't have the dough to buy at launch date. The cheapest systems started at $199, and just go up from there at launch date. I'm at the very bottom rung of middle-class, barely able to call myself middle-class.

Had the Dreamcast preordered and that was it. I pretty much never saw the point in getting a game at launch, never a great lineup of games. Some good ones yeah, but I usually need several good reason to get a console, or it has to be really cheap. We are talking expendable income after all.
