Man, am I EVER gonna miss Iced Earth. I started going to church again recently, and as a result I decided to stop listening to bands that have blatently Satanic, or anti- God/Christian lyrics. And unfortunately, there is a lot of anti-God stuff on Burnt Offerings, so I have to sadly say goodbye to an old favorite.
I don't think Iced Earth is anti-god at all actually. Schaefer seems to have a spiritual side. He talks about an old friend on one song who died years ago but he still feels his friend watching over him. Also, one song on Burnt Offerings actually deals with the 9 circles of hell in Dante's Inferno with the end of the song talking about the suffering of Satan and Judas in the final circle.

I'm not trying to tell you what to listen to, but I imagine Schaefer would be surprised if someone told him he is anti-god or anti-religion, but I may be wrong. I don't know the guy personally, but he strikes me as a man with some level of faith. I'm pretty sure he has mentioned "God" in a couple of his songs

It's sort of an old stereotype, metal bands being anti-god. Ozzy actually did an old song encouraging people to go to church and yet many people think that he and Black Sabbath were Satan worshippers

The only genre of metal that actually does seem to have quite a few Satan worshippers is Black Metal, but even there you have bands who don't follow that line of thinking
Personally, I always listened to whatever I wanted to, despite any controversial messages contained in lyrics or imagery.. I went to a Catholic school in high school and listened to early Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, and Slayer, but still said my prayers at night.

Music should always be about something that sounds enjoyable to you, and puts you in some kind of positive mood. If it doesn't, or it causes you to feel uncomfortable in any way - then it's not doing it's intended purpose..

If you like Iced Earth, LISTEN to Iced Earth - I believe God wants you to enjoy what little time you have on earth, and feels you're smart enough not to take musical lyrics and imagery so seriously. That's why you were born with free-will, dude.. 8)

I could be interpreting the lyrics wrong. But it sounds like he's talking directly about God here:

"Living life in total lies
Judging others
Believe that I say or burn in hell
Bow down your head
You won't feel so bad
Do as I say or burn in hell

Close your eyes, look deep inside
Master of the ignorant
Master of the lies
Judgment day is close at hand
Generate that blasphemy
Master of the damned

Lies"

And it's not that I think a lot of metal stars like Ozzy are Satanic. I know a lot of them do it for shock value or because it's just the metal thing to do and that they don't actually believe it themselves. But nonetheless, I can't say I believe in God and then listen to music denouncing him. It's been a real struggle for me as I've been a metal-head for a lot longer than I've been a Christian.

I definetly stay away from the blatantly Satanic bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth.

From some of the songs I have heard from Iced Earth, I think he is against corrupt religious figures, not God specifically. There is a song on Something Wicked this Way Comes where the lyrics clearly show him bad mouthing corrupt priests. One of the things I like about Iced Earth is that the band really makes Schaefer himself an open book. Much of what I know about him I have learned from his music.

Have you ever thought about your soul, can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think that when you are dead you just stay in your grave.
Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you?
Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?

When you think about death do you lose your breath
Or do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope
Do you think he's a fool?
Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light
And I've changed my ways
And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared
At the end of our days

Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
That God is the only way to love

Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say they may as well worship the sun?

I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve

Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone
Open your eyes, just realize that he's the one
The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate
Or will you still jeer at all you hear?
Yes! I think it's too late.

That's the Ozzy song I mentioned earlier isn't it?

On a different note, the more I listen to FantomenK's The Massacre song, the more I find myself picturing a Streets of Rage game with Axl and Blaze walking into some club in a crime infested part of the city, and that song coming on just as they start cracking skulls. Such an awesome track

Food & Liquor-Lupe Fiasco

This is the first rap album that I actually listened to and really got me interested into listening to the genre. It still holds up like the first listen.
