NeoGeo CD Shmups

Post by HeavyMetalMe »

Do they exist? Do they create reason enough for me to put down a pretty penny on a NeoGeo CD?

I may be missing some (I know I didn't list any of the borderliners for example), but I'm racking my brain trying to come up with any more that were released on the NEO GEO CD and can't. As for whether or not its worth it to purchase a NEO GEO CD, I would personally hold off on it and look into investing in an MVS unit + supergun in the future for your NEO GEO at home experience. Its cheaper that way than an AES and you won't have to worry about load times or lost animation (which is what you will find in some CD versions of the game).

I wouldn't go into it expecting to get a lot of good shooters though, because unfortunately despite a few gems, the NEO GEO's shooter collection was not that impressive overall considering what it could have been...

It is also worth mentioning that Ironclad Brikinger is a Neo Geo shmup that is CD ONLY. It's ridiculously hard to find, and will cost you a fair bit of money if you come across it. You can see some video of it (along with video of every other Neo-Geo shmup) in the Neo Geo shooting special here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 2951691955

Aerowings is also Sonic Wings in Japan if you can play imports. It's a pretty fun game, I used to play it in the arcade all the time. Not sure how good the CD port is though, but you can pick them up for pretty cheap off ebay.

I'm pretty sure Metal Slug came out on CD, too. No ship but I'd consider it a shmup on par with the first 3 Contra games. Super fun, but again i've never played the cd version.

Last Hope, homebrew. Also came out for the Dreamcast and Neo-Geo AES.
