Jak, Dexter, Ratchet & Clank... what is the appeal?

Post by noiseredux »

These games are always popping up on lists of Best PS2 games blah blah. But they look so stupid to me. I don't know. What's the deal? Are they good? Why?

My sister swears the platforming in the first Jak game is nothing short of brilliant, but I haven't tried it yet. The game just never really jumped out at me either. I did enjoy Crash Bandicoot when it first came out though, and I think the first Jak game was made by the same team. Maybe I'll give it a whirl sometime.

Crash was another series I avoided. Though I have at least tried a couple of those. I can't say I'm a fan of 3D Platformers starring silly looking animals.

Now that I think about it the only game I ever beat of that type was Gex 2: Enter the Gecko, which I can hardly bear to play now because I get so mad at the camera. The only thing that kept me into that one was the look at different media genres combined with the character's banter. My personal interest in media helped a lot to finish that one originally.

Hell, I don't think I even got past the second "world" of levels in Crash Bandicoot, before getting bored even though I liked the game. I dunno, I feel like I'm not giving the games a fair chance, but they just look mostly lackluster to me, so I end up not playing them.

Before anyone should answer this post, this question needs to be answered:
Have you played any of these games?

no... I thought that was pretty clear by me asking if they were good.

You're not alone with Crash Bandicoot. I'm a huge fan of 3D platformers but the first one is stale and aggravating. I found the jumping mechanics to be too sensitive and the way to save in the game is starting to piss me off.

Anyway, Noise, the only of those games I've played was Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal and it was awesome. If you were to check out any of them to gauge your interest I'd recommend that one. My brother is a huge PS2 fan and told me to start with Up Your Arsenal. He swears by the Ratchet & Crank games and the first Jak & Daxter, but he recommended avoiding Jak 2 and 3 though.

I agree with the post above!

Jak and daxter were okay games. didnt really care for them.

But ratchet and clank are fun games! On the PS2 I've played most of them. I havent played the first one, or the last one, Deadlocked. Supposedly the first was too easy in the beginning and got kinda hard in the end. Deadlocked was too different from the series it was based on. Going Commando and Up your aresenal were fun. Well made games.

One came out for the psp and then ported to the PS2. I didnt really like the controls for the PSP version so I have to track down the port.

I havent played the PS3 ones but I expect them to be about the same as the PS2 ones but with better graphics.

The companies that make these games are buddies with each other so they've probably decided to do the standard crossover game.

Its just a marketing ploy to make people buy the games.

hope this helps.
