I forgot I had this picture saved on my hard drive. It is the wave form for the amen break mapped onto the proportions of the human body. Fibonacci in effect.

Ah, I haven't watched that in awhile. I forgot it had all of those golden rectangle film edits. I have that album/dvd. It's great stuff for meditating to, both the music and the imagery.

I feel strangely about BT's music in general though. He's like this level 4000 music production mega warlock, but I don't really feel a lot of soul in much of his pieces. Like the fact that he programmed This Binary Universe entirely in code and it sounds so lovely is this astounding and staggeringly complicated technical achievement. At the same time, a lot of the music lacks passion. It's like he has achieved this mathematical perfection in his music such that few can comprehend its utter brilliance, but in that perfection, some of the humanity has been stripped out of it.

BT is like some sad robot that is too smart for us all and just wants to feel, so he tries desperately hard to belong by impressing us with his superior technical knowledge, and we are impressed and think he's shiny and cool, but ultimately never fully accept him as human.

Can't say I've ever thought that much about it. I love TBU, it's one of my favourite pieces of media ever (I say that because it simply must be experienced in DVD form, not just as an audio CD, you're missing a vital part of the experience if you have only heard it CD form).

But it's more learning than analyzing.

I used to be all obsessed with time, but then I realized it doesn't matter. For me, i've always been able to play something as long as I was able to memorize the pattern (and i've played tons of different times). I once played a piece in percussion ensemble with no time signature. It was written in pictures that represented how long each instrument should play.

Don't forget Captain Beefheart, Dillinger Escape Plan, Primus (the song "eleven"), Dismemberment Plan, and US Maple for strange time signatures!

Jungle music was great in the 90's. It had a style and sound that was unlike anything else. Then everyone got tired of the Amen and they lost the island vibes and went for a darker sound. I burnt out on the late 90's early 2000's drum and bass pretty quick. Then for a few years I wasn't paying attention to anything coming out. Then into the late 2000's things picked up a bit again. I see dubstep going through the same thing. It can't quite make up its mind if it was to be experimental and abstract or just pound out the heaviest bass lines. I still miss and listen to the old jungle sounds though. It sounds just as fresh now as it did back then.
