My first attempts at DMG modding

Post by riggs »

So, I recently started using LSDJ to create music and like a lot of folks wanted to do it properly. Picked up a couple of EMS carts, backlight kits and other various mods and this is the result;

(thanks to DJTransformers awesome shop for the parts!)

That's a standard grey DMG with PiL buttons/screen, prosound output, underclock switch and green backlight and a yellow PiL with red buttons, prosound, and red backlight.

I have christened them Jack Skellington and Pikachu!

Why have I posted this? Well, I thought you guys would want to have a looksy, but I've also got a little problem with the yellow one.
I noticed last night that I've got columns of vertical pixels that look like they're not working properly. It's not the usual 'dead' pixel syndrome (ie, fix with soldering iron). These look kinda weird...like they 50% lighter than they should be, plus it seems to affect every 5th or so column. I thought it was a bad ROM flash at first, but it happens with every cart I put in the system.

Anyone got any ideas what causes this? I can post a piccy if it helps..?

[edit]
Nevermind...took the thing apart and fixed it. Was something to do with the bottom PCB (the one with the cart slot). Hooked the top PCB to a spare bottom one I had and it all worked ok.

Link to/resize images that are wider than the forum theme please.

Also this should be in the Hacks and Mods section.

Pretty awesome! They look great. You should post the music you make on 8 bit collective. I'm putting some of my famitracker and fruity loops stuff on there.

I think doing stuff with a DMG will be in my future at some point. I was inspired by this video.

Yeah, created an 8bc account yesterday, should have some stuff up soon. Just doing covers at the moment while I familiarise myself with LSDJ. Just finalising a Metric cover atm...
