Neither of the first two were huge sellers (especially considering the budget of the first game), and today it's popularity level falls squarely in the "cult" category. Today's development environment would not allow for the type of budget or production value that fans would expect- Shenmue 3 would be unlikely to move the number of copies that would warrant a AAA budget, and a smart funder would apply a much more modest budget to meet modest sales expectations. Hence, fans would end up getting a B-Grade game.
Well, games are bigger than movies now, and bigger money makers, so I think they can pull this off if they can justify making 4 Yakuza games, why can't they at least finish the spiritual sucessor to that series? Many things from Shenmue live on in those games, but I don't buy them becuase they don't appeal to me. It's just not the same experiance to me.
I think more people know about Shenmue now since it has been in the news the past 2 years, and Dreamcast is now popular again sega thinks, or they wouldn't have released the Dreamcast collection. I think they are testing the waters, and think that now with Dreamcast games comming out on Xbla and everything, they just need to release 1 and 2 with HD resolution and they would be big sellers if they did a good quality port.
If Sega can let the Blue hedgehog die and focus on other mascots, they can get the true hardcore fans to buy their games again.
I think it should be done, they just need to give Suzuki another chance.
