Did I f-up my NES?

Post by Rayban »

I went in to add a USB CopyNES into my NES but now I get a solid green screen with or without a game. I check all the connections for the CPU and all of them trace to fine to where they go to.
During the desoldering of the CPU, the desoldering braid brushed against the bottom of the board and caused some sparks so I don't know if that would have caused my problem. I added some pics of my lockout chip snip ( ) It seems to me that it would cause any problems but maybe...
Oh and I have a brand new 72pin installed.
Here are some pics:
I'm just learning to solder/desolder so be kind :)

If you saw sparks, that's no good. Was it plugged in?

That brown capacitor directly below the CIC, the joints look messed up.

I'm not sure why people use desolder braids to desolder DIP components. Use a desolder iron, it's a million times easier.

Are you sure you stuck the CPU chip back in the correct way? Maybe it should be turned around?

I have a desoldering iron but the tip is way to big for the small pins and I found it was faster and easier to use the braid. It was NOT plugged it. I'm not that much of a noob! But I think I did forget to "discharge" the power by hitting the power button after unplugging the system. I had to solder in a different cap that came with the kit but I put the old one back in trying to trouble shoot. And I'm 100% sure I have the CPU plugged in correctly.
I saw sparks but no popping sound or funny smell...

you could have blown the CPU. They weren't meant to be handled like that.

What pins? And yeah, braid takes longer and can kill the board by melting traces off the plastic. I'd not try to desolder that way if I had a choice in hell! :P

Update: I got another NES to butcher and it turns out the first CPU was bad. I plugged in the second one I desoldered into the first NES board and it works flawlessly!
It was either zapped from the sparks or it just got to hot.
I ended up using this from Radioshack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2062745
It worked out pretty well...

What are you going to do with your dead CPU? :?:

Probably toss it in the trash, why?

If it were me, I would find a busted up NES that doesn't work, pull the CPU out of it and put it in the first NES to make it working again.
