not counting popful mail, dungeon explorer, zeldas, etc, that is the only rpg i have ever beaten (i think). i bought it very close to launch, so it holds a dear place in my gaming heart. it has been a few years since i have beaten it and the urge has struck again.
Good times man. Have fun. Nothing like revisiting an old favorite, that's for damn sure. The only thing that rivals the "aha" moment when you accomplish something in a game, is that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you realize you remember every detail of a game you haven't played in years as though it were yesterday.
I only beat 7 one time, and I definitely enjoyed it. But my favorite of the series is certainly 9. Love that game. It's the only one I beat more than once.
i never played 9. i loved 7 so much that i bought 8 when it first came out. and i didn't like the game...at all. i never got past the first disc. so i think my dislike towards 8 stopped me from buying 9. i know 9 is a favorite among a lot of gamers. i should give it a whirl at some point.

i have beaten 7 numerous times.
I also disliked 8 after playing 7 because of mainly the battle system. I found it to be a chore rather than fun. I don't really have anything good to say about the story either.
9's battle system on the other hand is reminiscent of the battle system in the older FF games but with some new elements, and it has imo a much more fun story and the character's are genuinely enjoyable and it's fun to watch them interact.

Very true.
Zidane is extremely refreshing as FF protagonists go. He's a really fun character. Hell, the whole cast is brilliant, you ask me. Steiner and Vivi are just perfect.
You know one of my favorite parts in that game? When the party splits into 4 groups of 2 to challenge the bosses in separate locations. I'm not sure why, but I really enjoy that part.
FFIX is just what the doctor ordered for a jaded Final Fantasy patron. Freewheeling and fun story, memorable characters, the best musical score of the PS1 FF games [imo], and some amazing graphics for the PS1. If you need something to get back into RPGs, this is definitely it.

what i disliked about 8 was the weapon/magic system. FF7 was the first RPG i have ever played. i had to get used to it, but i loved the idea of materia: finding materia, fighting battles and watching them grow, mixing and matching between party members, weapons and armor that doubled or tripled the growth of materia, etc. i found it all very cool.
when i got to 8, i seriously was expecting the same thing. but it wasn't even close. drawing magic from enemies? are you kidding me? i thought it was all very stupid, hence why i didn't get too far into it.

I felt the same exact way, FF7 was my first RPG as well (Not including Pokemon)

Yep, everyone I knew who played it got sick of drawing magic to junction so they would just repeatedly summon GFs over and over again. Watching the same cutscenes repeatedly was damn near as tedious and mundane as drawing magic. I also really liked 7's materia system whether it be attaching the materia to your equipment or finding a new materia or mixing materia together. Phoenix + Final Attack anyone? It just felt a lot more polished and less convoluted then everything they tried to jam into 8.
