Why buy a Slim? Get the Fat for HDAdvance/HDLoader Hard Drive convenience.Bradtemple87 wrote:I was thinking the same thing. All the Best Buy stores I service have at least a couple in stock. Seriously though, if the PS2 slim gets a price drop from $100 than I'm probably gonna buy one and keep it boxed as a backup.
I think I could play my PS2 forever and be happy.

Well I was just thinking of a basic replacement if my other slim dies.CRTGAMER wrote:Seriously? Get the Fat for HDAdvance/HDLoader Hard Drive convenience.

Okay, but a used Fat is cheaper at Gamestop. You can really give it a run test to be sure of reliability. Gamestop will exchange if it goes bad for at least the first seven days, or was it a month? I have two Fats, both with the HDAdvance/HDLoader arrangement. This is the best, convenient way to play PS2 games. The internal quick Hard Drive makes the Fat better then running PS2 games on the Slim or even the PS3 backwards model.Bradtemple87 wrote:Well I was just thinking of a basic replacement if my other slim dies.CRTGAMER wrote:Seriously? Re: I think I could play my PS2 forever and be happy.
Yeah, the fat with a hard drive is great, I have one myself. But HDAdvance/HDLoader/OPL isn't compatible with 100% of the PS2 library. That and the fact that I'm not too big on buying consoles used when they have optical drives, especially from GameStop. Who knows the way the console was treated by previous owner(s). The point (for me, anyway) of buying a PS2 slim is that I would get one brand new.
Re: I think I could play my PS2 forever and be happy.
I can agree strongly with this. I've already got two dead PS1's in my closet, the lasers wore out very quickly after I purchased them due to their age. It's getting harder and harder to find decent used consoles without excessive mileage on their optical drives.Ziggy587 wrote:That and the fact that I'm not too big on buying consoles used when they have optical drives, especially from GameStop. Thats really why I want a few brand new ones as back ups. You can find a good used one if you look good, but I'll feel really good in about 5 to 10 years when the current PS2 dies and I can just open up another brand new minty one. I have a thing for opening new stuff.Dylan wrote:I can agree strongly with this. They are on clearance at Best Buy right now. One of my stores had them priced at $11.99, but I'm sure they will drop even more.corn619 wrote:Thats really why I want a few brand new ones as back ups. Re: I think I could play my PS2 forever and be happy.
I wanted to elaborate more but forgot. When you buy a used PS2, you don't know how it was treated. If it's a fat, some one could have used a slide card on it a million times. If it's a slim, some one could have done the swap trick a million times on it. Not to mention, I'm talking about having a back up for YEARS down the road. By that time, it might be hard to find a PS2 that's mint. Having one brand new in the box would be great.corn619 wrote:Thats really why I want a few brand new ones as back ups. $11.99? Typo?Bradtemple87 wrote:They are on clearance at Best Buy right now. One of my stores had them priced at $11.99, but I'm sure they will drop even more.

^ Hopefully he was talking about the memory cards, lol.
Anyways, I cleaned down my PS2's lens as suggested, along with the spindle or whatever it is that holds the discs in the center... and it's perfect again! It does look pretty good on my HDTV actually through composite, I think I just need to get used to it.
Now for a dumb question, what do you guys set your screen size to in the system configuration on the PS2? To me it seems like leaving it at 4:3, and just having my TV in that mode looks best. But I could be wrong.

Depends on the TV, I guess you have a Widescreen? Some PS2 games offer a Widescreen mode in the game. Be sure to have component cables, they are inexpensive. God of War looks phenomenal at 480p. PS2 Gran Turismo and PS2 Tourist Trophy can kick all the way up to 1080i.Ryvius wrote:Now for a dumb question, what do you guys set your screen size to in the system configuration on the PS2? I can see the argument for getting a brand new PS1 slim, for the guaranteed new condition, the reason why I do a good burn thru after a used purchase. I still like playing PS2 games the hard drive fast load way, hence having an extra PS2 FAT on hand. I even have extra HDAdvance discs, I still like the commercial disc convenience over dealing with FreeMC. Topped that with HDLoader 8c installed in the Harddrive for the tricky games. The few games that are not HDL out of the almost 200 hundred I own, I can count in one hand. A shame Fats are not sold new anymore.-- I'll buy a new Slim --
Because of what others stated above is the reason why I have two of every console (four of the Dreamcast), except the Ataris and the Game Cube. I do need to get another Cube and a third Fat PS2 though, disc based machines are not as robust as the cart machines. I am hopeful optimistic that PS2s will be easy to find even 20 years from now, so many have been sold.
The best way to play PS2 games, off a convenient menu driven fast hard Drive in a Fat PS2.
