Oscars 2011 or: Am I the only one who watches the Oscars?

I don't usually watch that kind of thing, but I do often agree with the nominations. There was a fair amount of quality movies this year.

I did however get a lot of amusement from everyone getting upset over Arcade Fire's Grammy for best album. Loved seeing an actual band win something for once. Although, considering the grade A crap that's won in the past and was nominated aside Arcade Fire, maybe it's not that great of an honor...

I heard Zachari Levi is singing a song from Entangled at the Oscars. I'm a big Chuck fan and want to see Entangled so that caught my interest

I don't usually watch award shows though. I just sort of feel like I ALREADY know what the best movies are and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know which ones will get the awards and which will get ignored altogether(Scott Pilgrim). So there's no point for me to watch something so predictable.

I haven't seen Scott Pilgrim yet, but I am curious: do you sincerely think it is better than any of the films nominated for Best Picture? Are the performances better than those that have been nominated? I am not trying to pick a fight, I am just curious why you think this film was one of the best of the year, given the competition...

I'll tune in for a bit but it's hard to watch with all the ads and fluff. This year however I have actually seen more than one of the movies nominated so that makes it more interesting.

Among the best picture nominees I've seen Toy Story 3, True Grit, Inception, Social Network, Winter's Bone, and part of The Kids Are All Right. Among those I have to say Winter's Bone is my favorite though I'm sure it won't win. I don't understand the popularity of Social Network. I mean it's a good movie but I feel it was largely picked because of its topic matter and a similar quality movie about something less timely wouldn't have nearly the support.

Oh and since the animated film category is the only one I've seen all the films in I'm going to comment on it. Toy Story 3 is definitely my favorite among them and I would be shocked if it didn't win even if it wasn't quite as good as its prequels. How to Train your Dragon was decent and a great kids movie that adults could also get some enjoyment from but it doesn't quite have the heart of the other two. I had high expectations for The Illusionist since its made by the same people who made the excellent Triplets of Belleville. I really enjoyed the art style and absence of dialogue but I felt the story dragged on and would have benefitted from being a bit shorter.

Oh I'm not trying to say it's the best movie of the year, but it certainly deserves to be nominated for SOMETHING. I just don't like how high brow these things seem to be. Niche movies like Scott Pilgrim or Kickass get ignored. Scott Pilgrim should at least be acknowledged for it's originality, special effects, choreography, and great supporting characters

I would put Scott Pilgrim in the artistic direction or cinematography categories if I could. They did some really unique things with the special effects and camerawork in that movie that really treated videogame and comic book style with full respect, yet translated it to celluloid. I was very impressed with that movie in that regard for pushing the artform of cinema forward a bit by introducing new ways to present moving pictures. I think Scott Pilgrim is just not a movie that takes itself serious enough for Oscar people to recognize that. It's about videogames, it's intentionally over-the-top and campy, and it's largely a comedy, so it will be ignored, but it was a great film.

I didn't think The King's Speech deserved so many awards. I should have known though-- period piece, stuffy British actors, main character overcoming some form of disability-- it's got all the trappings of a typical Academy favorite.

Damn Oscars. Black Swan should have swept it.

glad portman won. wish banksy won but whatever. i think true grit was kinda overrated, im glad it it didnt win.

I was also glad Portman won, but I would have been ok with Annette Bening too. She was excellent in The Kids Are Alright.

I would have liked to see Banksy win too, just to see what he would do about giving an acceptance speech given that he never reveals his identity to anyone.

I didn't see the other documentaries though, so I can't really judge whether Exit Through the Gift Shop was the best, though it was a damn fine movie.
