Why don't sports games get much attention in retro world?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I think serious sport games get overlooked because the latest iterations better the retro releases in every way so why go out of your way to hunt down an old game?

Non serious games like speedball 2 deserve much more attention though

I sell Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl on the NES quickly whenever I put them up. I think the reason these are so popular is when Tecmo Bowl was released it was a HUGE improvement over any other home console football game out there at the time. and its current popularity is a reflection of the nostalgia/retro fondness that people have for it. it also didn't go through the new version every year with very few changes except teams/players. when you flood the market with versions you dilute recognition for a single game.

I think the reason the Mutant League games are still so popular is that they add that "geek" flavor needed for the retro gamer to take interest.

I think the people who played Madden NFL 93 back in the day, if they are still playing games, are playing Madden NFL 08 or whatever the most popular, up to date football game is out there today. thats why these series can sell a new (nearly identical) version every year for each sport

and of course

NFL 2K

I agree.

Although Sensible Soccer was never obsoleted IMO (the Fifa games went 3D and the gameplay of simple 2D soccer peaked with SWOS, probably).

I agree sports and racing are 2 of the genres I loved during my Sega days. Today I play only a few sports games and mostly as tech demo's when they up the graphics My collection has all of the cool sports games, but its funny that many people see them as commons thus useless. Still a cool part of the collection of my old games to me.

To me its about how great Madden 92' and College Footballs National Championship were to me and the rivalries I had. Playing College Football as Nebraska with 15:00 quarters for an entire season. runnin the triple option which was our high school football teams strategy it was so fun. I gained something like 1000 yards a game rushing and never passed. Madden 92' I think was the first year you could have the All time great teams. Being a Bears fan playing as the 85' Bears was amazing.

NFL 2K stands out as the first giant leap into 3D football. Its sad to see what happened to Visual Concepts. They had a killer game series in NFL 2K, a fantastic alternative.

Most of the sports games that I like generally don't play like the sport at all. Infact I think that most of my favourite sports games are all retro games for the NES. Punch Out, Excite Bike etc. I didn't really regard these games as sports games anyways, maybe thats why I enjoy them. Oh I also like World Cup 98 on the PSone, great fun that one.
