Actually, that's not true. I use to think so myself, but I recently learned there are in fact some incompatible PS1 games with the PS2, and it varies between the versions of the PS2. Even weirder, there are some versions of the PS2 that have incompatible PS2 games.

there are workarounds though. For instance the slim can't play Puzzle Fighter. But it can play the Japanese version if you know how to load imports. That's what I do.

Couldn't agree more with the topic, as I had the most fond memories of playing videogames on the PS2 (I was forced to "share" my PS1 with my younger bros). The PS2 was truly the first multi-function gaming console, as it was also my very first DVD player (not a very good one thou).

But you gotta give its due for its highly-diverse gaming library, which the PS3 probably won't catch up within the next 3~5 years (to be fair, gaming industry has changed dramatically during the last few years). And man, look at the RPG lineup for the PS2, there is no way any ordinary man is going to finish all of them!

I still haven't moved on to the new consoles (360, PS3, Wii) because I just keeping buying games on the cheap for my PS2 and I'm happy with that (well, that and my laptop and GameCube). There is amazing diversity in the PS2 library and diversity is what I most care about, so this is clearly the console for me.

As for the Grand Theft Auto debate, I will also add that I think San Andreas was the best of the bunch. I'm not a big fan of 80s music and style though, so Vice City never quite hit me right. The original GTA III is the only one I have played from start to finish though. Largely that's just because it was first, and also because San Andreas has so much fun stuff to do that I never cared about the main quests. Like Ack, I love my BMX. I would do jumps, drive bys, and tricks. I just loved that damn little bike. I also like the camera in San Andreas and spent a lot of time photographing sunsets and dead hookers. Ahhh.... that's fucked up, isn't it?
I don't want to turn this into a GTA thread, but GTA3 definitely had the best soundtrack. The dub radio station was all Scientist!

As for PS2 - I will be playing my library until I'm dead probably. There are quite a few franchises I've not even touched yet ie. Fatal Frame, Rachet & Clank...

Does anyone have advice for getting the best video out of PS2? Right now I'm using my Fat on my HDtv w/ S-Video, but I also have a Sony Trinitron with S-Video (sadly, no component). I was thinking about switching over to component on the HD, but some of the games like Darkwatch look terrible on it.

I would definitely recommend getting component cables and a TV that supports it. However, it seems you're using one of the CRT HDTVs, which have really nice image quality despite the size of them.

Personally, I haven't played a PS2 game on a CRT in almost 6+ years. However, I will say that most LCD/LED TVs you buy today will almost certainly handle PS2 games a lot better than when I first bought a LCD TV. Currently, I have my PS2 hooked up via component to an LG LED TV and the image is fantastic. Actually, I was playing Jak X Combat Racing (which has support for 480p) and I had forgotten to turn on the progressive scan and didn't even notice it was off.

Anyways, I think in the end it depends if you want to ditch your CRT or not. If you purchase a new TV, definitely get a component cable for your PS2.

I've been having trouble getting used to my PS2 on my 32' Samsung HDTV. For some reason it just looks terrible to me, really muddy, etc, with the component cables and all. I'll need to mess with the settings more...

You don't know PS2 muddiness until you've played it on a 92" projection screen with composite cables.

I recently got a 50-something-inch rear projection TV for free, and I wanna get rid of it. Everything looks like a 90's bootleg movie. It's horrible.

And again, despite it's flaws, I guess I've been blessed with an awesome HDTV for retro gaming. I've said it in many other threads (some people are probably thinking, "Ziggy, shut the fuck up!"). I've played a NES via composite and it looked absolutely amazing. I play my SNES via S-Video a lot on it, and it looks great. I used that S-Video cable to check out the N64, and Mario 64 looked incredible. The colors were so bright and vivid. And I've been playing my PS2 a lot lately on it, using component cables.

It's a Dell (yes, Dell) 32" LCD 720p TV. It has some problems, like some times it'll shut off and turn back on with no sound, and I have to turn it off and back on again to fix it. The control buttons on the TV itself don't work right, so I can pretty much only use the remote. But although it's only 720p (kinda wish I had 1080 for movies) retro gaming looks great on it. And the sound is amazing too, best sound quality I've ever heard from any TV's speakers.

Damn, I just checked to see if mine has S-video support and I don't think it does. :(

That sounds awesome for the SNES setup. And yeah I saw some NES games played on one of my friends big HDTV's once, it looked insanely good.
