If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?
Re: ps1 games on ps3?
Earlier you said:mas wrote:First of all I'm not lame. I will give you and the rest of the people here what I am talking about. All the games that you mentioned were all 2d games and they still hold up great. Try playing a game like critcom or fighting force and you will know what I mean about games that are hard to play in this generation.
Now let me explain to everyone what I feel and hopefully everyone can get off my back or see what I mean.
See I was a hardcore gamer and collector. I had at one point over 150 to 200 games of each of my systems. NES,SNES,GENESIS,GAMEBOY/GBA,GAMECUBE,SATURN,GAMECUBE,DREAMCAST AND PS1 AND 2. But as time went on I began to find out that I was a hoarder and I relized that I was not playing any of these games and I decided that I will sell everything and have money in the bank and just have a ps3 and a wii for the kids. It feels good not to collect anymore and once I found out that the ps3 can play ps1 games and people were telling me that the games look better on the ps3 I got curious.
Now I love the ps1. It has such a great library and some games are cult classics. But I want to start dishing out money for ps1 games and play the games for a day or two just for memories and once I start i wont stop buying old games again and I dont want to play that record again.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone on this post. I was just asking true gamers who knew about this stuff and seeing if anyone knew. I am just going to stick with buying current games and yes I know that this is a retro site and I do love retro games. I do have a modded xbox and on friday's I play mame and nes, genesis, and snes games just for memories.
I'm sorry again if I upset anyone but I just don't want to buy old games and play old gems unless it's really worth the money. I just think if I spend 20 or so dollars on ps1 titles these are games I already played or save that money and get games like killzone 3.
andAlright I just asked a question Now that i got my answer then Im not going to get any ps1 titles. Thanks.
In other words, what you have been saying so far, up until your last post, is that you don't think PS1 games "look decent enough to play." In other words, if the graphics aren't good enough for you, then you don't think a game is worth playing. That INCLUDES all the 2D games.i just want to know if the ps3 makes ps1 games look decent enough to play again?
Then, in your last post, you CONTRADICT yourself and say that only some of the games (mainly the "blocky" 3D ones, I'm gathering) are not "good enough", but some games are good enough. Which is it? You are saying two entirely different things here.
I agree that a lot of 3D PS1 games really do not hold up graphically... at all. 2D and stylistic 3D ones generally hold up, while others did not. It seems that is what you are getting at, but it is NOT at all what you have been saying up until now.
If you don't think buying retro games (PS1 in this case) is worth the money, then that's fine. It is the way that you were saying it that came off really badly.
As for PS1 games, a lot of them, especially 2D ones, stylistic ones and some arcade classics (ie. Ridge Racer) do still hold up very well. Old arcade classics like Ridge Racer and Tekken 1 or 2 can be had really cheaply, and are a lot of fun to go back and play with for a few minutes here and there. Did you know that a lot of these cames are downloadable to the PS3 via PSN? You don't have to buy the discs. Most of them go for just a few dollars each (or currency equivalent where you live) and they are just stored on your PS3's hard drive. Graphically, the might be cleaner if you're using a good quality video connection than on a PS1. For the most part, they will still look the same.
I'd say you would be well off to go the PS1 downloadable route. There are a fair number of decent shoot 'em ups (more if you buy from the Japanese PSN... and you CAN, because PSN games are region free!!!), 2D fighters racers, puzzle games, etc. You can even download PC Engine (Japanese PSN) games and Neo Geo games. So, there is a VERY good 2D game selection that is affordable.

Re: ps1 games on ps3?
I wasn't trying to contradict myself. What I meant was that there are alot of 3d games that are now hard to play on the ps1. You would have to play these games for a few days or so to get used to the graphics. The 2d games for the playstation still hold up fine thats why everyone can go back to the 16 bit or 8 bit era because the games hold up and its easier to play mega man or sonic than twisted metal or tekken 1. I don't want you to think I hate the ps1 at all and If I said it like i do hate the ps1 then my fault. I just wanted to see if the graphics are smoother on the ps3 that's all. And if I find decide to get any ps1 games later on then I will only get the games that the playstation network don't have like tekken 3 or street fighter alpha 3 but only a few. I just need to control my spending habit and just get the games I know I am going to play. This whole video game hoarding and collection is an addiction and I do not want to spend and piss money out the window again and have my wife pissed since we are saving for a house. That's why I sold everything.

Understood, but that isn't what you originally said (intention or not).mas wrote:I wasn't trying to contradict myself. What I meant was that there are alot of 3d games that are now hard to play on the ps1.
Personally, I agree for the most part. I do like those early 3D games, though, like Tekken and Virtua Fighter. The styles they used to overcome graphical limitations are genius, and I enjoy seeing them in action. You would have to play these games for a few days or so to get used to the graphics. Hey, I TOTALLY understand what you are saying here.I don't want you to think I hate the ps1 at all and If I said it like i do hate the ps1 then my fault. My advice is don't worry about a few games like Tekken 3 and SFA3. SFA2 is available on PSN and is a great alternative (I actually perfer it). Tekken 2 is available, and so is Tekken 5 on PSN. Would you really need Tekken 3? Maybe for nostalgia, but then you fall back into the collection trap that you currently want to avoid.
I'd say just stick to PSN and also get into the Japanese PSN (you'll be amazed!!!).

Re: ps1 games on ps3?
I disagree with this claim and the logic behind it. Part of what makes playing a game from any era fun is understanding it within its historical context. That is true for playing either Sonic or Twisted Metal. Both of these games are still amazing in their own way, they still "hold up" and are better than their rivals of the time, but have been surpassed over time. Doesn't mean they can't still be easily enjoyed thoroughly...mas wrote:its easier to play mega man or sonic than twisted metal or tekken 1.
Perhaps I don't get what you mean by "easier to play".

I think I do, even thought it isn't worded well.dsheinem wrote:I disagree with this claim and the logic behind it. I find a lot of the old PS1/Saturn polygon games ugly. Twisted Metal is among them (but I dig Tekken). I can get into it, but it takes a while. PS1/Saturn Tomb Raider is another.

Re: ps1 games on ps3?
Nothing worse then a delayed argument on a blog.
Might as well jump in to the fire. Every console has great unique games, don't let graphics be the deciding factor.
I think the PS3 will give a better image on the LCD which I guess is why the OP question. But its still upscaled from a lower resolution source of the PS1 game. Probably not a good idea to waste mileage on your PS3 running PS1 games anyways, a PSX console is an inexpensive investment. I wouldn't even waste my PS2 run time for PS1 or DVD movies either.
jfrost brought up a good point. A lot of new downloads and cell phone games do have the Retro look about them.
