Sports Cards

So I want to sell off my massive sports card collection. I could use the extra space, and the extra spending money..

Has anybody ever gone down this road before? What are your suggestions?

I've got Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey cards mainly, and a few notable rookie cards. But ultimately, nothing really worth selling individually - so I was thinking of just selling it off in one large lot. Should I go the eBay route, or does anybody have any useful resources that I could look into?

I have a bunch of baseball cards from the 80s that I keep hoping will be worth something, but it doesn't seem like card collecting is as big of a thing anymore.

Unfortunately, sports cards have taken a huge dive in the market. It'll be really hard to sell them separately unless you have rookie cards, signed cards, etc.

I'm holding on to mine for now, hoping they'll be worth something in the future.

i used to collect sports card (basketball to be exact), i'm pretty much over it but won't be selling my collection anytime soon. i guess eBay is the way to sell them away..

Sadly I think their time has come and gone. They are similar to comic books in the regard that no one gives a shit about them anymore.

I too, go through this every so often. Sometimes I hold off until a certain player or team gets hot, then try selling them on Ebay. Last year I sold, probably the rarest David Ortiz Rc card on ebay. It was once valued at over $500, mine sold for around $50. Timing is everything. I saved some of the good ones and display them in my house bar, some others I put aside for my son, the rest to ebay. Good Luck.

ps. This may be a lesson to those of us who collect games for an investment, instead of for the enjoyment of it.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys.. It's such a shame the market for these things has effectively been killed off.. Going through all the boxes really brought back a lot of awesome childhood memories collecting them and hoping they would be worth a ton someday, (little would I know. )

A part of me wants to just keep them - if nothing than to give my kid(s) one day when I have them. (As well as the fact that the way my luck runs - I'll sell the damn things and then there will be a HUGE resurgence of interest in the hobby again..)

But as it stands, I'm going to keep my old Philadelphia Eagles cards, (as a Philly football fan, I'll NEVER get rid of them!) and then probably going to eBay with the rest to see if I can get even a little spending money for them..


By the way - If anybody out there is looking for a particular card or player/team related card, feel free to message me! I'll comb through my collection again as I'm trying to sell it, and if I find what you're looking for, I'll gladly put it aside and just give it away for a dollar or two for shipping...

I recently sold my brother in law's collection, tried local card shops, tried craigs list, then did the ebay thing. His collection was EPIC in all ways, absolutely elite stuff, Jeter UD SP, Chirography's, 1 of 1 proofs, just insane and rare serial numbered - game used - autos, etc. He bought cards individually at shops, never bought packs. He was making 70K a year for 2 and a half years and spent it all on star wars toys and baseball cards, easily put 50K alone into Mark McGwire and 100K in the collection over all.

The baseball cards are all gone. I paypal-ed him the "profits" last week. Under $1,100.

If you have any love for it at all - keep it. We all use ebay (I think), but it has killed many things, this is high on the list.

Ugh.. disheartening, to say the least... Thanks for the advice, though, it sucks cuz that sounds like a really nice collection! What a shame..
