Are 1st person shooters, Shoot 'em ups now?
I would say no due to the drastically different gameplay mechanics, and many would agree. However over time the meaning of words changes and if you say you like shmups, msot people will ask if you've played the newest COD.
So are they?

I guess i should have expected such a intelligent discussion :p
But seriously we can deny it as much as we like but FPS are sold and advertised as shmups (at least in the UK) and so should the meaning of the word be brought into question?

In Japan, too. If you go to a game shop, FPS games and shmups are usually on the same shelf under "shooting". Only in some rare cases, shmups will have their own section under "STG".

I would think so. With so many more FPS's in recent years compared to shumps targeted to the main consumer, I could kind of see shoot'em ups being used to refer to a FPS, though I would never use it.
