want to know about these sega genesis carts

Post by executioner »

Hey guys, a friend of mine gave me these carts since he saw I was collecting video game stuff. Here, non official copies of games was a regular thing to see when I was a kid. We even grew up thinking famicon was a cheap copy of a nes because of the amount of famicon clones sold and because they usually broke down easily. Megadrives were also sold in electronic shops and were cheaper to get than genesis. Can anyone tell me if these are japanese carts or just cheap copies? or maybe something valuable and rare?

This one I have the us version and you can compare, the box is b&w so that is weird.

Also have some pics of the famicon clones another friend of mine kept stored and gave me and some famicon 62in1 and 136in1 carts I bought at some chinese electronics shop recently, if you like to see them.

compare your shadow dancer with the real shadow dancer. the fatal toons cart is so fake. also why does the 1st image of batman have sms style griding on the casing? do those games play exactly the same?

I have Evander Holyfields real deal boxing, and it has that grid on it, that's the only one I can think of right now, but lots of them do.

Streets of rage also had the grid and I think most of the early first party releases do too

I'm 99% sure all 3 carts in the first picture are fake, as is the B&W case Batman Returns (the top cart).

The labels on each of them is pretty much a giveaway, except for the Shadow Dancer one I guess.

I grew up with a Japanese Mega Drive, and most Japanese MD carts have a different shape to that of the Genesis ones. They have rounded sides with horizontal ridges all the way down them, unlike those in the picture which have the smooth "shark's fin"-type of side (can't think of any other way to describe them, sorry.)

Also, I vaguely recall original carts usually had a brown/bronze chip/wafer inside the cart, unlike fakes which usually had white/silver ones.

Um.. I haven't touched my MD in years but that's as far as I can recall. Pretty sure these are good ways to spot for fakes, though not entirely foolproof of course.

Hope that helped.. else I'm sure someone who knows better will come along and correct me soon enough. :)
