Hold on, isn't this just PSN bannings? Sony's perfectly free to do that since the PSN is their service, just like how we can ban people off Racketboy. You can still use your PS3 to play all your old games offline.Niode wrote:Exactly. If you think Sony is entirely blameless in this situation then you are clearly deluded. It seriously worries me that hardware that you own is no longer yours. It is held hostage by Sony. They can do whatever they like with your system whether you like it or not. That's a VERY scary prospect. If you don't think that, then you either don't care about your rights as a consumer (another scary prospect) or you are a moron.
Linux returns to PS3. Yes, that's both fat & slim models.

I was thinking the same thing. Sony has the right to do whatever they please with their own online service that they provide and maintain.MrPopo wrote:Hold on, isn't this just PSN bannings? Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I don't think they can do whatever they please. There are laws protecting the consumer from some abuse.Flake wrote: I was thinking the same thing. Sony has the right to do whatever they please with their own online service that they provide and maintain.
I'm pretty sure they can't ban a paying customer* that hasn't broken any of the rules Sony has set, and also Sony can't just include any rule they feel like (e.g. I don't think they could have a rule excluding anyone with first name "John" to use their service).
Ivo.
* And yes I would think PS3 users are paying customers, as the free online service is a selling point of the PS3. Racketboy in contrast is free so unlike Sony if Nick decided to ban me because he does not like my jokes he can do that.
Re: Linux returns to PS3. Yes, that's both fat & slim models.
It's the fact that they are banning you because you've got a modded system that I disagree with. Now you might say 'but Microsoft did that'. The key difference here is that the SOLE reason anyone modded a 360 was for piracy. Jtag wasn't around at the time of the first major banwave. I can get behind a company wanting to protecting their system from piracy. However, Sony is banning people from PSN just for having a modded system. Regardless of whether or not it is used for piracy. I modded my PS3 to restore functionality I PAID FOR. Yet I'm seen as a pirate in their eyes and can be banned. That's bullshit. I haven't done anything wrong, I haven't broken any laws, I haven't even circumvented their copy protection (as per the DMCA which doesn't even apply in this country). I am just using my system in the way I intended to use it when I paid for it.MrPopo wrote:Hold on, isn't this just PSN bannings? Again, if their policy is "only unmodded consoles are allowed on the PSN" then them's the breaks. I understand you being annoyed by it, but the choice is yours.Niode wrote:It's the fact that they are banning you because you've got a modded system that I disagree with. I don't play on PSN hardly ever. The only game actually worth playing was Uncharted 2. Even then I'd much rather play Bad Company 2 now. So it's not really a major loss for me, but it's just the principle of the matter. Sony forced the hackers hand by removing Linux. If they hadn't removed linux in the first place the system probably wouldn't have been hacked. The way I see it is I'm just reinstating functionality that I paid for that Sony literally stole from me.MrPopo wrote: Again, if their policy is "only unmodded consoles are allowed on the PSN" then them's the breaks. By that way of thinking though, isn't MS an evil bastard who removed support for 3rd party memory cards as well? Does that mean that MS is evil for banning users from xbox live, when they really just wanted to use their memory cards?Niode wrote:I don't play on PSN hardly ever. Ironically, I doubt they would have bothered removing linux if it wasn't for Geohotz's original linux hack. Now granted that hack was fairly useless, but it's all cause and effect.Niode wrote:I don't play on PSN hardly ever. The only game actually worth playing was Uncharted 2. No because they didn't ban people from Xbox Live because they used third party memory cards. They banned them because they used them to cheat. Big difference. Besides it's a moot point. They may have removed 3rd party memory cards but allowed people to use USB memory sticks less than 3 months later. I have yet to see Sony add a feature to the PS3 in the last 12 months.ZeroAX wrote:By that way of thinking though, isn't MS an evil bastard who removed support for 3rd party memory cards as well?
