Virtual Console not making the cut.

Post by elph »

As the owner of a Wii, I have to say that I'm very disappointed in the Virtual Console. Yes, you can get cool retro games. But it seems to me that Virtual Console should have been what Xbox Live Arcade has become. I know Nintendo makes many wise business moves, but I can't help but think they are throwing away money by not getting WiiWare out. Let's be honest, the new Bionic Commando game makes me drool. But can you imagine that game using the Wii remote and a nunchuk? It would be a-w-e-s-o-m-e.

Another thing I don't get about Nintendo is why they have done the things they have with respect to online gaming. They have almost no presence. It's ridiculous. So many of the games they have would be great online. Can you imagine 8-player online WiiPlay tanks? I don't know if I'd ever leave my living room.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Good on N for making the classics more freely available. There's not enough of that in the gaming world.

But as a longtime gamer I'd rather get something new to go with the ocassional DL of a classic I don't already own. That's where VC is failing.

I can't imagine a more bare bones featureless download service than VC. I love Nintendo and my Wii, and a lot of the games on the service. I don't expect them to be comparable to Live so early in N's online venture but damn, at least give us online multiplayer and voice chat.

I've bought five games; only ones that aren't emulated properly.

I think the VC has been great for the classic games. Much better selection and emulation compared to Live.

I'm hoping now that WiiWare has a launch date in May, Wii will finally get some of the great new games Live has to offer. I am excited to see what some small developers can do with the Wiimote.

I'm hoping they continue to get even more classics and really beef up the shmups and RPG's. Live is getting so many good games and all the NeoGeo stuff too!

Wii is the only new sytem I plan on buying, and mostly because of the Wiimote possibilities. Lets hope they make some interesting advances!

My biggest props for VC is that now, finally, after so damn long, I have a perfect wireless controller for the NES, GEN, SNES, TG16, N64, etc~

I love being able to be in bed at night, turn on the TV and Wii via remote, play a game for a bit, hit home/menu, save-state it, go to sleep, and pick it up in the morning. It's sweet. That's convenience I will pay for. :D

I think that's one of the biggest innovations for this generations. Wireless controllers with on/off buttons. Easily the best thing about the new consoles. I love not having to get up off the couch to turn a console on! It's great being a lazy fat-arse :P. It almost seems silly to actually get up and switch a console on these days. It also helps the consoles integrate more into the mainstream entertainment system (due to everything else these days having remote switch on).

I don't think theres anything wrong with VC, theres new games pretty much every week. Most weeks it's more than 1 or 2 games as well! I do think the big N are missing out on the digital distribution side of things. Such as downloadable demos for DS or even the Wii. This is something that really should be added to the shop channel.

At the end of the day the VC is just for retro games. Thats what the name implies. 'Virtual Console'. It's the shop channel that needs updating with more content, not just retro games.

I have to admit, I havent downloaded anything from VC in about 2 months, however if the C64 emulation doesnt have ugly blurry filtering (like the PC-Engine/Turbografx emulation does), then ALL will be forgiven :D
