throwing the towel in.....
Re: throwing the towel in.....
I raise my glass in toast and agree with you.
When your collection grows, it shows you that gaming has become serious... quite serious nowadays. More serious than you may have originally thought it should get.

Yeah, I think I know where the OP is coming from. I sometimes spend entire weekends driving all over the city and hitting every single store I can think of that sells discounted video games. Then I buy them and have the satisfaction of owning them. But a lot of times it's like the joy soon wears off and the following weekend I'm right back out there again hitting all the same stores and often spending money that I can't afford to spend. This is why I gave myself the username "Weekend Warrior" - I'm not in the National Guard. I'm on a mission to find great video games at affordable prices and to play all the best ones available for each system that I own.
But yeah... the shit gets tiring after awhile. Money starts to run dry. The game collection suddenly gets too big to fit on the shelf. The closet begins to look overfilled. Sealed stuff from months or years ago just sits there and collects dust. Your fav. old systems start to have issues or maybe even stop working. One of the games that you were trying so hard to keep in perfect condition somehow gets dropped/stepped on/wrecked.... etc. It all takes its toll after awhile
HOWEVER... I STILL LOVE VIDEO GAMES. AND I STILL ENJOY COLLECTING VIDEO GAMES.

I threw in the towel too. After playing and selling and collecting and driving everywhere to buy that one game or system and ebay it gets old quick. Besides after I sold mostly everything and today will be my last stuff to sell it's nice to actually have money in your wallet and in your bank account. I still will have my ps3 but the only game I want is mvc3. I would rather spend the 60.00 a year for just one game than 3,278.43 in which i spent in 2010 for video game collecting. I made a sheet and I wrote evrything I bought and that's when I knew it was time to give it up. And I feel alot better too.
I also just want to say if collecting is your hobby and you love it then don't stop doing it. If it makes you happy and your friends do the same then cool. But for me and I'm sure alot of other people here feel the same, after 25 or so years of playing and collecting and spending the money on games and when you have kids and a wife and that no one cares that you have every dreamcast game or that special limited edition of some game it gets old. I will play with my ps3 but now only for an hour or so on weekends.

Yeah. It's never occurred to me that I'd ever want to "quit" any of my hobbies.
To each his own, lol.

I go through phases of hobbies as well.
As it was posted above, everything in moderation. It's best not to become obsessed with one thing to the point where you wear it out and start to detest it.
Remember that it's a hobby, not a responsibility.

Funny, I think i threw in the towel a while back myself. I do have a copy of panzer dragoon saga that I cherish though. I do not want to sell that. I have beaten the game twice. The ONLY rpg that I have beaten twice. And i will beat it again a few years. My goal which i am not that far off of, is to keep 5 - 15 games per system that i own that I accuatly enjoy. Instead of someone else telling me that they enjoy it which for some reason causes me to think I NEED THAT GAME AS WELL. So i suppose i can feel some of that joy that the reviewer has.
I own a Jaguar, Dreamcast, Saturn, PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox... damn that is alot of systems for ME. LOL I know some of you have WAAAAAAY more, but for me that is a lot.
BTW i have this itch to pick up Epic Mickey.... oooh the will power to put it off till i get more caught up on my backlog.

Exactly. I still collect from time to time but I'm 34 now and there's just too many other responsibilities now then when I was younger, single, and nothing to worry about other than how do I get complete the 2nd quest in the Legend of Zelda?
I really can't see myself ever disliking video games though. When I get the free time then I'll play my NES games for a little bit then I may jump to the Xbox 360 within that time frame. I just squeeze it in when I can and that's it. Sometimes I wonder why I collect as much as I do with video games. I think one reason may be because when I was a kid there were so many games I wanted and didn't get so when I got older and had my own money I was kind of filling a void I guess? I would go to Funco Land/Gamestop and buy tons of retro games at a time!

I also find it as a fun trip down memory lane as far as the retro games go. I love reliving those memeories as much as I like making new ones with the latest games but I also feel like alot of the games released now don't have that same replay value that the games from my days have. I can go back and play the original Super Mario Bros completely but I don't have that same interest with a great game like Call of Duty(maybe because it's overkill with that series) so I'll get rid of it but I will NEVER let go of SMB. Is it just me guys? I just can't really explain it or even understand it.

I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!
