Don't really understand your story. It sounds like you sent a package with a $.42 stamp which wasn't sufficient. All you have to do is put $.35 more postage and then put it back in the mail. I've done this a couple of times. Not a big deal.
I think he meant that they attached an extra stamp to send it back to his house when they could've just attached the stamp and sent it.

If it has insufficient postage, it goes back to the sender which will be in the same town as opposed to carting it far away. THey don't put a postage stamp on it to return it to you, just a red rubber ink stamp with the problem noted.

A first class postage stamp is good for one ounce. If the envelope weighed 1.1 ounces or more, it needed another 35 cents to cover up to 2 ounces. Or if your envelope wasn't a normal small or letter sized one, that costs more too.

Yep, I was sending out a cd in a jewel case with a instruction manual included. The thing was over the postage limit like hobie mentioned, but I'm pretty certain there was a value marked on the red stamp put on by the post office.

Regardless, I'm thankful that the package did come back to me, I heard some stories where people didn't get their package back after the tracking info provided a 'return to sender' message.

Right, that is telling you how much more postage to add before putting it back in the mail. Again, I don't see anything wrong that USPS is doing. If anything, you just don't know how things work. You can always call your post office if you're unsure of something or have a question.

When you deal with billions of pieces of mail every year, you're bound to lose a few items. Fortunately, this is very rare.

well in UPS infinite wisdom instead of shipping it from Roanoke, VA to Alexandria, they sent it to the Richmond facility. Its estimated delivery date is now tomorrow.

Just thought that I would check on some DVDs that I had ordered that are coming by DHL. Well actually, it goes from DHL to the USPS for final delivery. Check out this route and to add to the fun, I live in Maryland:

2/15/2011 06:30 AM ET Rutherford, NJ TENDERED TO USPS
2/11/2011 06:21 PM ET Rutherford, NJ ARRIVAL DESTINATION DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY
2/11/2011 01:19 AM ET Elkridge, MD DEPARTURE ORIGIN DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY
2/10/2011 08:42 AM ET Forest Park, GA DEPARTURE ORIGIN DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY
2/10/2011 03:57 AM ET Forest Park, GA PROCESSED
2/10/2011 12:45 AM ET Forest Park, GA ARRIVAL ORIGIN DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY
2/9/2011 08:30 PM ET Indian Trail, NC PICKED UP BY SHIPPING PARTNER

So let's see, it went through Maryland on its way to NJ where it sat for almost 4 days before being transferred from DHL to the USPS. Would have been nice if they dumped it in the mail while it was in Maryland, I would have had the DVDs by now.

While we're chatting about shipping, does anyone (MrPopo?) know how does the Amazon Super Saver shipping work? Does Amazon get a really good deal from the US Post Office or UPS by batching up orders in one big shipment?

And UPS final offense, the console was damaged in shipment. The box looked atrocious and the cd tray of the console had broken into pieces. The box literally looks like its been through a war. The seller is contacting UPS about an insurance claim.

I don't believe it's a batching. What we're willing to do is get people to order off Amazon if they're willing to take a reduced priority, but the $25 is to make sure we don't lose a fortune in shipping costs on a bunch of $1 items.
