Famicom exclusives

Post by mluitjens1031 »

I am looking for some recommendations of games to try out on the Japanese Famicom that weren't released in the U.S. I am into some of the movie/character - based games, such as Transformers, King Kong 2, and Star Wars.

Although, if theres a really good Famicom exclusive worth taking a look at, I will certainly check it out.

Based on these reviews of the Transformers Famicom games, I would suggest you not bother. He did like King Kong 2, though.

Transformers: Convoy no Nazo (1986)
Another spectacular debacle of a video game, this quickie cash-in from ISCO and Takara fails on almost every level. Really, a basic run to the right and shoot things game shouldn't be that hard to make, yet Convoy no Nazo manages to flub even the simplest gameplay elements. For example, most enemies are too short to actually be hit be your laser - it simply sails over their heads - thus forcing you to jump over most things that come your way. Even the most desperate Transformers fan should avoid this mess.

Transformers: The Head Masters (1997)
Ignoring the possibilities for crude jokes made at the expense of a name like "Head Masters," I'll just point out this is nominally better than Convoy no Nazo. Still, don't expect too much. Takara has taken their popular line of toys whose about cars that can turn into robots, and produced a game about cars that cannot turn into robots, and robots that cannot turn into cars. A Transformers game with no transforming! Well played, Takara....

Sweet Home is also supposed to be quite good, and is often considered one of progenitors of the survival horror genre. It's an RPG though, so if you don't know Japanese you'll have to find some way to navigate it.

Irem made it. It's like Castlevania meets MegaMan. It was scheduled for a North American release but it's a Famicom exclusive. Also, It's pretty tough.

I highly recommend Wai Wai World 2. Seriously a good Konami side-scroller/multi-mash game. :D
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)
