You can use Joy 2 Key to map keyboard buttons to your USB gamepad or any other variant program.
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

The sure way, but some work with ghosting if too many keys pressed at once. I soldered up a PC PS2 connector keyboard PCB. Basic Mame default keys, look in the Guides section.

Joy 2 Key did exactly what I was looking for and was really simple to use, thanks!

You can also use Xpadder, which is free up to version 5.3 (you will need to use a simple compatibility fix if you try using it on Windows 7 I think).

Racketboy has a tutorial for setting up Xpadder :)

This is what I use. Just right click on it and choose "Make Compatible for Windows XP" if you're running Windows 7. I use it to play my Pinball games I bought from GOG.com with my Wireless Xbox 360 controller :)

looks way better than joy 2 key, but joy 2 key is free, so i'll be using that. If i ever have any extra cash though this looks like it would be way more user friendly and has a lot more options.

I agree. Joy2Key is free and does a damn fine job. :D
I think I looked at Xpadder a while back but I never saw what was so much better about it so J2K for me. :P

Another good program I got off the developers site right before they shut down (they included the keymaker) -JoyShock

You can use it to make your analog stick control a mouse pretty well if you build the script properly.

Xpadder 5.3 is also free. Only versions after that are paid. 5.3 will probably have all the features you need.
