Update: UPS finally paid out an insurance claim yesterday on the damage they caused to the game system. This is the worst experience I've ever had with a courier, but I am glad in the end they actually refunded the seller and I money, they made us jump through hoops to do so. The most interesting thing UPS said throughout this whole thing was because the game system was used, and isn't sold new anymore, they couldn't refund any money because it had now value, unless you could show a store that normally sold the system in question, and for what value they sold it for. The price of the item on eBay meant nothing.
I'm sure every courier has bureaucracy, I've heard the USPS's insurance process is a nightmare, but this has caused me to think twice about shipping with UPS.
I really think UPS is much more inept than any other shipping service.
I ordered a package from eBay, which the seller choose to ship UPS. It was a system, so its heavy, and I get that, although he didn't give me a choice. So the system shipped on 2/10/2011, with an estimated delivery date of today 2/15/2011 from Mesquite Texas. So I log on today to see if my package was delivered here yet, I live in an apartment so it gets delivered to the office only to find out my package has been delayed a day. I live in Alexandria Virginia. The package was received in the Roanoke, Virginia facility yesterday, and was delayed a day due to "Adverse Weather Conditions". I wonder, I haven't heard of any adverse weather conditions in Virginia, so I looked up their weather, and its 53 and Sunny, same story yesterday. Now I'm a little pissed, so I take a closer look at the tracking, only to find out that they took the dumbest, most round about route to get from Texas to Virginia, shipping my package past Alexandria to get to Roanoke. Here's how it went:
Mesquite Texas to
Hodgkins Illinois to
Maumee Ohio to
New Stauton PA to
Roanoke VA to
Alexandria, VA
Instead of going through the south, then went through the North, but the kicker is, Alexandria is in between New Stauton, PA and Roanoke, VA! So it appears my package should have been delivered on Monday, but because the seller only paid for Ground, UPS had to make sure to throttle the package one day, so as not to give me a better service for free, then apparently they decided to lie about non existent weather conditions.
Update: I Hate UPS still

Re: I Hate UPS
Same thing happens when I had to ship a YLOD to the Sony Repair Center in Texas from California. PS3 went all the way to the East coast, racking up the Frequent Flyer Miles.
UPS still a great deal and ship a ton of frieght daily. Maybe the logistics of sorting may cause the direct route to be more costly?

That was just icing. What really pisses me off is that they listed "Adverse weather Conditions" as cause for the delay, when its was Sunny and in the 50s for at least the past 3 days there, with 0in. of precipitation.
Re: I Hate UPS
But it went through, five different places or something. Are you sure there was no adverse weather anywhere along the path?Jamisonia wrote:That was just icing. Also, it is quite possible that poor weather conditions delayed the arrival of the truck that was supposed to haul all of the packages out of Mesquite, Texas or one of the other depots through which it was routed.
I regularly fly between Maryland and Atlanta. When flying to Atlanta, I fly almost directly over my apartment and go another twenty miles to land at the airport. My apartment's on the way! What the heck?! I hate Delta!

you could make an argument for all the couriers about how hopelessly incompetent they all are and how each one is the worst.

I've seen so many "Fedex sucks!" posts, "UPS sucks!" posts, "USPS sucks!" posts, haven't seen very many "DHL sucks!" posts but that might be because most people don't seem to ship with them.noiseredux wrote:yeah personally I think Fedex sucks.AppleQueso wrote:you could make an argument for all the couriers about how hopelessly incompetent they all are and how each one is the worst.

I thought that DHL pulled out of the domestic shipping market a couple of years ago.AppleQueso wrote: I've seen so many "Fedex sucks!" posts, "UPS sucks!" posts, "USPS sucks!" posts, haven't seen very many "DHL sucks!" posts but that might be because most people don't seem to ship with them.
*EDIT* Actually, I looked it up and it sounds like they do still offer some limited shipping services in the US. They don't do pick-up or delivery service, so I guess that probably means they're primarily contract carriers for other companies? I don't know.
