Just curious. I always got the Xbox version of games available on both (and the cube)

NFSHP2 is better on the PS2 compared to the PC. If the Xbox is based on the PC port then maybe the game is ultimately better on the PS2!

PS2 had more content - cars, richier tracks (more shortcuts, details, and were longer overall), it had arguably better controls and felt more dynamic, though technically it wasn't superior. For some reason the cop AI was better in it too.

SSX Tricky - 60 fps on PS2, but only 30 on Xbox plus choppy framerate and worse textures.

Driv3r looked better on X but had more tragic framerate drops than PS2 iirc.

Some games could be considered "worse" on Xbox control-wise, fighting games for example (like SC II) are generally more comfortable with DS2 (Xbox controller had a terrible d-pad).

I've been told that Beyond Good and Evil is best on PS2... but have no facts to back that up. I do know that it's "worst" on the GameCube because of the limited room for full audio tracks, but can't talk much about the differences for XBox and PS2.

...unfortunately the Sony d-pad is also terrible, just in different ways. Nintendo is the only company that does a good job with their d-pad, which surprises me because (unless there is some patent involved) it doesn't seem like a difficult concept and there have been years of great controllers to use as models.

That said, if you really want to play fighting games then it's better to invest in a stick anyway, right? Then it becomes a moot point.

Yes, there are patents involved.

Wikipedia claims that the relevant patent (I'd be surprised if it's only one) expired in 2005. I don't totally trust Wikipedia on technical and legal issues surrounding popular media like video games, though.

Except on the Gamecube. But yes, patents do prevent Sony and Microsoft from making a d-pad too similar to any of Nintendo's.

HDAdvance/HDLoader makes the PS2 the convenient choice.

As far as which Beyond Good Evil game version is better? I have read that the XBox version is better at handling the frame rate and clipping issues of the PS2 version. Meh, happy with the PS2 release myself.

I didn't know about the patent, maybe why the original DPad design didn't go into production? Its not exactly the same as the original NES and SNES anyways, and every 3rd party controller seems to use the "patent" design.

I like the Sony DPad. A precise control when choosing a direction.

As long as you don't need to go diagonally or do any circular motions.

The PC version of Beyond Good & Evil is the best.
