I'll pass on this because I'm boycotting Sony but also because it will likely be filled with temporary rental DRM games. I do like the idea of having proper controls though. Touch screen only is horrible for most games.

The idea is good and this sort of device has real potential. It's just all of the bullshit that Sony has to pour on top of everything they do, that always ends up ruining it for the customers.

1)Bad OS (the hardware didn't have enough ram for both games and the OS, and ended up crashing a lot)

2)Very small software support (only Sega and Eidos published games for it)

3)Tragic design (you had to close to phone to change games)

4)Tiny screen

I really believe and want the Xperia Play to succeed. Heck if it has enough support, a year from now, I'm selling my phone and upgrading to an Xperia Play.

Man when I first heard about this thing, I thought it would bomb hard.. It actually looks intriguing, but I got a smartphone in December, so maybe next year I could check it out.. The specs on it are similar to that of the Galaxy S, Evo 4g, Iphone 4 and Droid X so nothing to groundbreaking in that area.. But the controls definitely compensate since touch controls are god awful.. I could see this being a moderate success, especially since most users of smartphones will play a game on it in one form or another..

Forget it. I'd have to re-purchase all of my PS1 and PSP Mini games. Boooo.

That's hog shit. IIRC, you can play PSN games on the PSP and the PS3, why not let users DL the games onto their Xperia Play?

Lol, typical Sony. Just another reason not to buy a PSP phone. People are gonna learn the hard way that when you buy a digital download game, you don't really own anything.

Under those circumstances it would be like strictly the best Android smartphone to have for gamers.
I guess really what I'm implying is where are all the 'BUT IT DOESN'T RUN MY UMDS' people now, when aside from the phone portion it's essentially the same device (as the PSP Go, sorry, cutting down the quoting for brevity). I guess digital content is more more acceptable currently in the mobile phone space than the dedicated gaming handheld space.

Judging by the fact that it was just announced today you'd have to re-buy existing PS1/PSN purchases that are compatible with the Xperia Play, that it's not going to get off to a very good start. I'd probably wait and see where the support for the phone is a year from now. If it's anything like the PSP Go, well..it won't have been the smartest purchase in the world.

Problem was, that when the PSPgo launched, most PSP games were much cheaper as a UMD than on the PSN store. Nowdays there are a bunch of games in the "essential" line, that go for 7€ on the PSN store.

Yeah, the digital PSP library gets more love over in the EU than it does here in NA, it's a shame. That's why we have NA and EU and JP accounts though. ;)

I just hope Sony actually supports this thing, otherwise it's dead in the water.

This thing went from "day one" to "one day".
