I have recently been enjoying the Mac as a means of playing older computer games that I missed out on the PC that we were too poor to afford growing up. Now that the money is there, most of the PC drivers are not, and even with compatibility mode there are often big problems running older games on modern systems (try reading the humorous statistics in Dungeon Keeper after a match - "like how many lies were told", "how many backs were stabbed", "how many creatures were annoyed" - when they flash by like the pictures on a slot machine).
With a PowerPC Mac, even very old games (i.e. System Shock) will install and work just as easily as a new copy of Peggle, and for games requiring Hardware Acceleration, it is a real joy to have such universal compatibility. BUT recently, I ran into a real hassle with the Classic "No One Lives Forever 2". It seems that there is a serious compatibility issue with any versions of OSX later than 10.2. The game will refuse to even start if the refresh rate is not EXACTLY 60 Hz. This is pretty tough to find in better quality monitors.
Anyway, after some Googling, it appears that a Patch was made to fix this problem. But guess what, MacPlay (that now became Mumbo Jumbo), is no longer offering it and NOBODY seems to have it online. MEGA BUMMER!!
But alas after a month of searching, I finally found someone else who has the patch and with a little tinkering, it works superbly now.
It then occurred to me that someone on the board might also have this game and be unable to play it because of this issue. So I will be happy to email the patch (9 MB) to anyone who might want to use it. This game is a real hoot, and runs well even on modest Macs (G4 700 MHz).
Will keep it for a few months on my hard drive if anyone wants to get it from me.

While I can't condone Mac gaming, NOLF2 was amazing.

A good heads up, great FPS game, have the PC version.
One of the reasons why I hang on to my G3 iMac CRT. To play older games including Dual Boot to 0S9. My Retro Mac is too slow for this game though.
I did find a direct download:

Re: No One Lives Forever Mac-Refresh Rate Patch FOUND!!!
I can't believe this game is considered ancient that its hard to run it on a computer these days,
I used to see it all the time on Apple's website...
damn, does time flies...
I also can't believe those were the graphics in 2003....I mean 2003 is not that old

You raise a Great Point. Time is pretty hard to keep track of in media. I was blown away by how long ago it was that Terminator 2 was made. It still looks so good that it really doesn't seem like 20 years ago. Think about what the corresponding Nintendo game based on the movie looked like at that time! As we keep going, the games are looking nearly as good as the movies they are based on.

There seems to be a lot of talk out there about the characters looking 'splintered' and broken under 10.6.kingmohd84 wrote:will it run on mac os x 10.6.6?
