What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I just re-watched Critters last night. I giggled like the idiot I am the whole time. Oh how I miss the SciFi channel showing all four films. Now all I get is Sharktopus and Aztec Rex.
What is the world coming too.....

The Thing (1980s remake): Great movie! I saw the original a couple times when I was very young with my Dad. I think the remake had a lot of the over the top creature effects typical of the time, but I loved it! I think this might be one of my favorite horror films from the 1980s that I have seen so far. Not that it was insanely scary or anything, but just well put together. The cast was great (although I would have preferred Donald Pleasance over Wilfard Brimley). The story was exciting and there weren't many dull moments. I am surprised to hear the movie failed when it came out, but somehow has an 8.4 on imdb. I guess it has become something of a cult favorite. I also find it interesting that there are characters named Mac and Windows since this movie came out before those operating systems (I think). I looked up the history of the names for both companies and, though both seem to claim otherwise, I am positive that both developers (what are their names again) were hardcore fans of this film!

My Soul to Take. Pretty good horror flick, though it seems to suffer the same fate as many other teen-horror films, which is feeling at times like a bad teen drama with horror elements (don't get me wrong, I like Degrassi and 90210, but I DESPISE Gossip Girls). I mean, Sorority Row almost felt like that show Pretty Little Liars with an R rating. Or maybe at age 24, I'm starting to feel old. The strange part is my often teenaged view on the world clashing with the adult part of my personality.
Oh, and if you can, after the movie, watch the alternate opening and alternate ending #1 (#2 is fine, but it's just #1 with a different monologue and something else happens between the main character's bedroom and the highway).

Watched The Host. I've heard many nice things about it and was pleased to find out they were blissfully true.
I was kind of surprised that they let you see the monster so fast. I'm used to the beasts in monster movies hiding in the shadows or moving so fast you only catch a quick glimpse until later on in the movie, but they pretty much showed that beastie right from the start. They didn't really even try to hide him. It was just, 10 minutes in *BOOM!* Monster. It was kind of refreshing.

Watched "Enter the Void" yesterday. HOLY SHIT what a mindfuck. Seriously, trippiest movie I have ever seen.

Restrepo: This was a great documentary featuring two filmmakers digging in for 15 months with a platoon in what was the most dangerous outpost in Afghanistan. I was not sure what to expect, a lot of battles with someone narrating about the importance of democracy or something like that. I was pleasantly surprised, however, as there was no narration at all. Just watching the soldiers going about their daily rigors for 15 months. There were interviews spliced in throughout, but these were just soldiers talking to the camera about their thoughts and feelings regarding their experience, not about the war and who is right or wrong or politics. Pretty intense film with some moving scenes. There were quite a few scenes involving the soldiers acting like idiots that will probably be dissected by critics, but anyone who actually pays attention will see that these are not soldiers acting like children, but trying to cope with the daily physical and emotional toll their deployment takes. Another moving scene...
EDIT: I forgot to mention that this film does not cast the American soldiers as perfect, again something I like. They are not necessarily saviors and make some mistakes (some big ones) that they regret very much. I also see the somewhat futile nature of some of the "allied" (is there a different term for our allies in this war) objectives, which leaves me a bit hopeless regarding this wars outcome. I feel more than ever that we will sort of say "hey we accomplished what we want, time to pull everyone out" without really accomplishing anything other than setting up a government that will not necessarily work for the Afghan people, most likely leading to continuing conflict of a different variety. Especially after you see just how remote Afghanistan is and how disconnected the people are from each other and from the world. It is no surprise these people don't really care about what we are trying to accomplish. They don't have TV or internet so they don't really know about what we are saying their extremist kin are doing throughout the world. We most likely sound no different than the Taliban, coming to them with evil stories about the enemy - seems like they just want to stay alive and keep their family and land safe regardless of who helps them.
SPOILER
involves the soldiers coming upon one of their comrades who has just been killed (no they don't show any killings, which I found to be a nice touch) and the emotion hits them right away. Through tears that no one thinks less of them for, they continue to focus and get the job done. It was kind of uplifting to see that these soldiers still had some of their humanity. Seeing them continue to work made me admire even more - and I am not for war or killing or anything like that. That was what was so great about this movie, it was about the soldiers without any other crap thrown in. I was actually able to appreciate the job these guys are doing or at least how hard it is. I may not agree with this war, but these kids do and they deal with some pretty unbelievable things every day.

My copy of Endhiran came today. Gonna try to gather the kids next weekend to watch it. I just scanned through the disc to make sure it was ok and while the whole thing isn't fights like the clip I posted before, but it looks amazing with just the right amount of entertaining cheese.
