When I try and put an avatar into my account it says that it's too large. And rightfully so, since the limit is 80 pixels, height: 80 pixels, file size: 6.00 KiB!!!
I can't even get a 10x10 pic on here. What am I missing?

If your desired avatar is a photograph, it should be a jpeg.
If it is pixel art, it should be stored as a .gif or .png.
But a 10x10 image should work, even if it's encoded uncompressed at 24 bpp. That would only be 300 bytes.
