How long are the cut scenes, about? I'm just wondering if I should bother playing it.
I don't mind cut scenes, but I can't stand it when they last longer then a few minutes (at the very most!) or occur way too often. Like what happened a few times in Twin Snakes. A cut scene finally ends, I take two steps, and BAM another cutscene. Annoying. When I put a game on, it's because I wanna PLAY it, not watch it.
edit: I was just reading that in MGS4, you can at least pause the damn scenes. Is this possible in MGS2 or 3?

I don't remember being able to pause them in MGS2 or 3; I think it skips them

Well I just finished Twin Snakes. Damn, those end cutscenes are so god damn long! It didn't take too long to play though, so I'm thinking about checking out the PS1 version now. I'll probably be able to get through it quickly since I have the game fresh in my head.

I can complete MGS1 in an afternoon. It's pretty straight forward when you know what you're doing and know how to take the bosses down quickly. It gets ridiculously quick to complete when you have the bandana and the stealth camo.Ziggy587 wrote:Well I just finished Twin Snakes. Damn, those end cutscenes are so god damn long! The cutscenes in MGS4 actually make me laugh when I think back on them.
I only played it once, so obviously I couldn't time it or anything, but when I was playing it I felt that I had spent about an equal amount of time actually playing vs. watching cutscenes.
It was a good game, I enjoyed it, and going back to Shadow Moses was one of the best experiences in this generation. But man those cutscenes were crazy. The ending alone, my god. I remember it was a little after 4 am when I "beat" the game, but I didn't shut off the system until it was nearly 6.

Eh, Twin Snakes sucked in another one. lol, I hope you can go back and appreciate the original, I like it way more. Has a lot more charm, doesn't look that dated at all, original cutscenes aren't Matrix-ed, and the original music is much better.
That said, yes the later games have insanely long cutscenes. This is never a problem with me (also a fan of the Xenosaga games myself), but even MGS4 pushes the limits for me. So it's hard to approach that one and be in the mood for a replay, the others aren't as bad though.
I'm not sure what my favorite is... maybe the original with all the nostalgia and I've beaten it so many times. I played the heck out of MGS2 as well, even though I don't think the story or characters was as good as the others, the gameplay was still awesome and had a lot of replay value. MGS3 is just plain awesome through and through.

Re: Metal Gear Solid - Help a n00b out!
OK, so I played through Twin Snakes and I actually played all the way through the original. I was just curious, more or less. I liked them both, not sure which one I liked more. You know what I really liked about the game? The entire game takes place in one location and in one night (I'm guessing it's in the early morning when you finally get out). This aspect of a story always gets me, and apparently also works for a game. I wont go into detail here, but there's just something awesome and special about a story that only takes place in a 24 hour (or less) period. Especially when it was dark when you first arrived and then it was day light when you finally got out.
So I just started playing MGS2, looks good so far. I'm right in the first part of the game. Hopefully the cutscenes wont cause me to lose interest.
Is this game much longer than the first one?

Re: Metal Gear Solid - Help a n00b out!
Gotta agree with you, the whole 24 hour thing is pretty cool. Not to mention it's easy to burn through the original so you can kind of marathon the experience yourself if you wanted, lol. I think MGS2 is like that as well, at least during the Raiden part (which is most of the game). Wonder what you'll think of him... haha.
MGS2 I recall maybe being a bit longer, but it's been a long time. Either way I do believe both MGS2 and MGS3 are a tad longer than the original, but they're still kind of shorter games. Like 10-15 hours or so, lots of great replay value though if you end up liking them.
Can't remember MGS4's length though, but as others have said the game is literally like half cutscenes. Hopefully MGS2 and MGS3 don't bother you there, because that's not even scratching the surface compared to MGS4...
