Problems with getting burned games to work on my Dreamcast

Post by Yukima »

I'm sorry if these questions have come up before...

I've had a Dreamcast for about a year, and it's rejected every homebrew and burned game I've thrown at it... while only original discs played just fine. I've used Discjuggler and tried to burn the games at the lowest speed possible (unfortunately, the lowest my CD drive has is 25x...) and followed all of the directions I've found online on how to burn these things, but no response. I just get a message saying "please insert game disc."

I'm suspecting two things. One is that maybe I'm not using the right CD-R media - I'm using Memorex discs from Walmart, since they seem to be the only ones available around here, and I'm not sure where to get better discs. Another thing is maybe my Dreamcast is too new. The manufacturing date is June 2000. According to what I've researched online, I've seen several dates for when the anti-piracy coding (or whatever) was added to the hardware, but the date most often quoted is something like October 2000, iirc.

Could someone please clarify?

You should be good here, so I doubt that's the problem. October 2000 is always the date I have seen as well.

Have you looked for and used tutorials?

Also, I am moving this to the Tech Help section. Do a search of that section and you'll likely find some help.

hiya Yukima ,

what sort of images do you have ? official scene release or something else ?

also Taiyo Yuden CD-R ive found are the best for Dreamcast. Ive tried about 5 different types of media in them and TY perform the best.

your burn speed is a bit high , X4 speed is recommended for Dreamcast ........fast burn speeds make it harder for your Dreamcast to read the data off the CD-R hence lessening the life of your DC.

try this setting in Discjuggler works for me every time..........the point here is to tick TAO write.

Some games do require the Utopia Boot Disc to work. I have 3 or 4 games that require it. I did have a problem with a couple of Dreamcast games not working at all, no matter how I burned them or what program I used. I did the whole burning games/modding systems thing back in 2008 and 2009, so its not as fresh in memory as it used to be. But Disc Juggler usually worked. :)

You probably just need to find an older burner that can go slower. I use my old laptop, though I have older burners lying around I could stick in a system. See if anyone is getting rid of an old PC that you can snag and install the old burner.

I do too, but hopefully she can find one locally, instead of having to ship one. :)
