X-Arcade vs Agetec Stick

Post by redmachus »

So, I've been looking to buy a good arcade stick for my Dreamcast for awhile now. I don't want to spend money on a piece of crap, so a basically narrowed it down to these two. So, which is better? I know, everyone and their mother loves the official stick, and if I could find one for a decent price, I wouldn't hesitate. However, prices for these things are ridiculous. I've never seen one for cheaper than $65, not including shipping. On the other hand, a new X-Arcade stick runs about a hundred, shipped, and I could upgrade it later for other consoles. Does anyone have any thoughts? I play mostly 2D fighters, so that's where it will get the most use.

I must mention first that I have never played with the X-Arcade, only read about it. There are tons of great reviews by websites like ign and kotaku but honestly I don't know whether to believe them.

There are a ton of people in forums (such as shmups.com) who hate the X-arcade stick. I don't know if they have ever used one but they seem to hate lots of things. They complain about how big it is, how much lag there is, how the connectors sometimes don't work, the crappy stick, and how it can not be modded to accept japanese parts easily. I don't know whether to believe these people, either.

It really depends what you want. The X-arcade has the american bat-stick and concave buttons. I always prefer the Japanese ball-stick, but that's me. Of course, the DC stick is just as great as everyone says (I have two of them), but it obviously only works with the DC (there might be adapters, but I don't know anything about them). There are a few people who don't like the feel of the DC stick; hopefully you could find someone who has one so that you can try it out.

A lot of people get custom sticks, which is the best option but quite expensive.

Another option, which people may scoff at, is to play with a pad like the Ascii Capcom pad or Saturn pad (with an adapter). You won't get the arcade feel, but they are very precise.

The X-Arcade looks like it also requires a sturdy table to be played on, that affected my decision because that doesn't fit into my gaming setup.

Sorry for the long post and not much information. I'd like to hear from someone out there who has actually used the X-Arcade. A hundred shipped sounds like a great deal, I thought the stick itself was about that and then the shipping would be crazy expensive for being so huge.

I have a X-Arcade solo and I like it.. It is kinda big and bulky but it does the job. But to tell you the truth.. when I started buying the cables for different systems and saw how much they totaled up to.. I decided to build one myself. I grabbed some HAPP controlls and some MDF and took a couple days off work.

I started getting my photos together and posting them on my web page http://evolvingconsole.com/pro_arcadestick.html if your interested.

I have a HORI Real Arcade Pro and a Agetec DC Stick and I can say that although I really love the HORI stick the DC stick feels that little bit subtler which makes me prefer it. Ive never played an X-Arcade thou.

I had to look up the Agetec DC stick...OH! the green goblin! I'd def hit the Agetec over the X-arcade. But my opinion is the Jap vs Amer stick/button setup, which do you like?. A lot of folks in my area don't play DC unless for MvC2, so I'd think the sticks could have made it to the flea/pawn markets.

Thanks for the input. I'm still not decided; I think I'll just see what comes my way at a decent price and go with whatever it may be. I like my dreamcast, but not enough to sink a hundred dollars for one controller. After all, that's another console and some games. Since I don't play enough to justify building a custom stick (nevermind the fact that I wouldn't know how), I'll just wait.

I went and built a 4 player arcade mame system with their sticks and buttons. They are extremely good quality and really awesome. You should love it as a dc stick.

Mind you I used their sticks, buttons, switches and put them in my own housing and wired to a usb controller. But the feel of the sticks and buttons should be the same.
