As of this morning, Toshiba officially announced it plans to reduce shipments and completely phase out the HD DVD hardware by the end of March 2008.
To me, this is a great relief, the format war is finally over. (Plus I've always preferred Blu-Ray) The main reason being the fact that whenever I asked a common person, they would say, eh I got HD DVD player because I have an HDTV. WTF?
I had to wonder what they thought a Blu-Ray player was for, and when I asked them that question, I got some pretty interesting answers. Most just got upset because they couldn't figure it out. DUH!
To those who bought it because it was HD DVD, and they had an HDTV, I hope this is a slap in the face to wake up and learn for yourself what tech does.
To those who chose HD-DVD with a knowledge of the formats, sorry that you came out with the short end of the stick, but at least the war is over with.
As for me, I can't wait to go and ridicule those when I ask them what format they still plan to buy, and they still answer HD-DVD 2 months from now.
(I know, I know, I have issues, lol)
If you aren't interested in keeping your HD DVD player, sell it now before it becomes almost worthless...
What are your oppinions now that it is over?

oh noes I'm an idiot because I picked up a cheap ass HD-DVD player.
Darn it all to fuxors... I must be a mo-mo.
Good for the blue ray, it'll only fail in the long run anyways as well. It ain't like this format is gonna stick into the main consumer market like Sony hopes. It will stagnate, pitter away, and finally one day will be replaced with some newer format that actually has a big difference over DVD.
My HD-DVD player, XBOX360 add on. Not to shabby for 90 bucks... no need to wear out the 360's DVD-ROM when watching movies.

Never intended to buy either.
Upscaling DVDs is fine for me.
However, I rarely use any discs at all.
When I buy a movie or music CD, the very first thing I do is rip it, convert it to a high-quality file and put it on my media server.

Well I'm hoping we'll see a huge dump of HD-DVD players on e-bay soon and I'll be able to pick up one and some movies for dirt cheap.
Though what I'm really interested in getting is one of the rare HD-DVD-R notebook writers. Hopefully some of these OEM suppliers drop their crazy $400-500 prices now that the format is dead.

Using the media for data storage is actually the thing I'm most interested in. I back up a lot of my stuff on tons of DVDs. Moving them to less Blu Ray or HD-DVD discs would be nice, but, it has to be significantly cheaper per GB than a hard drive for me to go for it.ImportBoy wrote:Well I'm hoping we'll see a huge dump of HD-DVD players on e-bay soon and I'll be able to pick up one and some movies for dirt cheap.

Likewise, my main interest as well for HD-DVD and Blu-ray. I'm sure the blu-ray discs will come down eventually. The price of blu-ray burners has down from like $1000 at launch to around $400 now. My hope is everyone who has remaining hd-dvd-r disc slash the prices now.Using the media for data storage is actually the thing I'm most interested in. I back up a lot of my stuff on tons of DVDs. I would trust either format for long term data archival as oppose to a hard drive which probably has a better chance of failing then optical media in the long term.
