then my guess is that you haven't really played a lot of games. Even if you were to not like this game, even if it's your least favorite Zelda game, how can it possibly be the worst game of all time??? That's just a ridiculous statement.

Well, they did make awful games. I don't think they made anything that was even playable until the SNES.

Granted, I suppose they don't belong in the same ranks as Big Rigs, Superman 64 or Pit Fighter. They made awful, awful games, but that was more a matter of bad taste - I think we can objectively say that the others I listed were just rushed, buggy, technically unsound messes.

Not unlike Bethesda games. Bah-Dum-Tish.

Trio the Punch.

There is a Wikipedia entry (!) for this game over at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trio_the_punch for those who may not be familiar with this "game".

And I use the word "game" quite loosely here.

Actually it's not only easy to beat, it's impossible to lose.

You need to get into each hole and collect letters. Once you have all the letters you must go to a certain place and you win. I have seen far worse.

Some people also need to differentiate between "I don't like" and "It sucks"

I must now repurchase ET and beat it!

yeah they did make some awful games. They made some good ones too. I've written quite a lot of posts about the good ones. In fact, I'll quote myself from a recent one, and do notice that all the ones I mention are pre-SNES:

noiseredux wrote:Here's some LJN games that I think are good:

Jaws (NES) may be really difficult, but I remember spending a lot of time on this one. I'm sure any NES fans who are about my age feel the same way. Believe it or not, it was a pretty big hit back then. I feel like everyone had a copy.

Major League Baseball (NES) there's nothing really special about this one, in fact it's very close to gameplay and look/feel of Bases Loaded really, but it happened to be the baseball game that my dad bought me, so it's the one I played. I can actually remember my dad and uncle learning how to play it too (I think the only video game I've ever seen my dad play). It's not a great game, but a good one. I still enjoy it.

Friday The 13th (NES) is still really hard. But the graphics are cool (it looks like Camp Crystal Lake) and the music is awesome. I think everyone knows this game is better than they say it is -- but fear disagreeing with AVGN.

A Nightmare On Elm Street (NES)... do this: hit "search" above. Then in the KEYWORD box type NIGHTMARE ELM STREET then in the USER box type NOISEREDUX. You should get lots of posts of me talking about how great this game is.

NBA All Star Challenge (GB) there's actually 2 of these and they're both decent. Think of them as basketball mini-games. Shoot-outs and slam dunk contests, etc. Fun stuff for short bursts.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Game Boy Adventure (GB) I don't even care, this game is BETTER than Bug's Bunny Crazy Castle. There I said it. It's a puzzle/platform game, much like that series, but it controls really really well. Trust me. It shocked me, but it's awesome.

Alien 3 (GB) this one is really impressive actually. There's a post on HG101 about this game (on the blog) which I thought was so amazing in its praise that it actually inspired me to start my own blog! Alien 3 is actually a game that displays a vast understanding of how to visually create a maximized experience using the limitations of the GB's screen. Everything is detailed enough to make sense to you, but simple enough to not be too busy, big enough to handle, yet small enough to not cramp. Very efficient.

T2: The Arcade Game (GB) it's a fucking on-rails shooter! On the GB! And it's good!!!

Jaws and Friday the 13th were very frustrating, but I would classify them as pretty decent games. There are certainly plenty of games by popular companies that were much worse.

I liked Friday the 13th  I've never played Jaws though. My local retro store has it. Maybe I'll pick it up for when I replace my NES.

First off, we get threads like this from time to time, usually offering the same commonly-blasted games that everyone loves to hate on. I'll cover the big ones right here:

Shaq Fu - I've beaten three of the five ports of the game, and when I first sat down with it, I didn't understand what it was that made it so bad. The controls felt delayed, the story was laughable, and the jumping system really hurt. Seeing as I am a fan of fighting games though, the laughable story really wasn't so terrible...I mean, Mortal Kombat's story is pretty terrible too, as is Street Fighter and the KOF series. But the controls and jumping still bothered.

And then I looked at the back of the box. Shaq Fu was primarily animated by guys that had worked on Flashback: The Quest for Identity. So the game is essentially an attempt to create a 2D fighter that would have been as cinematic as platformers like Flashback or Prince of Persia. If you ever actually manage to beat the game, you get to watch gameplay during the end credits which shows honestly that the attempt works when the CPU plays, because the CPU can handle the variety of moves and the delay in the controls. Unfortunately it doesn't work when a player who has no interest in really learning it sits down with it and actually experiments for a while...and that's what Shaq Fu really is: a failed experiment, albeit an entertaining one when you think about it.

Also, the Game Boy version adds platforms into the stages, adding a new element that I enjoyed, hence why I prefer it to the SNES or Genesis ports I've played.

E.T. - I played this as a kid and enjoyed it. Sure, it has some issues with control, and it doesn't explain what you're doing at all...unless you read the manual. No, really, it explains what is going on, and while it won't fix some of the problems, you'll discover the game's not really as terrible as you thought once you know what it is you're supposed to be doing.

Superman 64 - Everybody quits during the first level. But the game isn't all rings, it's just so on the odd levels. It's unfortunate that the game didn't give us the even levels to play first, because those really aren't bad. But then I suppose everybody would complain about level 2.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I vote for Big Rigs as the worst, as it's so poorly put together, there's really no way it could be considered a game. It's like a game of Red Light, Green Light, except there's no Red Light and no goal to reach...and no floor for that matter. Here are a couple of other titles I'd argue in favor of (I won't include the Bus game because it's unofficial):

Pit-Fighter (SNES) - I'm pointing to the SNES port in particular. Pit-Fighter is playable and actually interesting in many of its versions, but the SNES port lost nearly everything positive. Instead there's about 3 colors, garbled and repetitive audio, no options, single-frame animations, tiny sprites, no story despite story-esque flashes being thrown in. They even did away with the health bar and instead just used straight numbers. I should note it is possible to beat the game...but unlikely, as the game is stripped down to the point it's almost unplayable. It feels half-finished at best, like the title was released in an early alpha build. The sad thing is the other ports just prove it could have been done and done well.

Ultraman: Towards the Future - This game is playable, I've made it to the final boss, but it's also one of the most asinine fighting games I've ever played. Instead of actually winning by KOing your opponent, you must beat them to within an inch of their life and then use a super move, which can only be done by waiting to charge up enough energy. That wouldn't be so bad, except all of your special moves require energy and each match has a time limit (it takes about half of which to charge up your super), so doing anything beyond jumping in and kicking or punching actually hurts you more than anything else.

Add to this the lack of controls (you can't crouch and attack, the only blocking maneuver you have requires precious energy, and your special moves are in a bizarre list arrangement you have to navigate while playing), the limited animation (on several enemies the only animation is a ball shooting out its mouth and a piece of tentacle moving forward or back...the scrolling foreground also manages to hide that particular attack most of the time), and the lack of any real options, and the game's a disaster that feels unfinished at best. The stages also are infinitely long, which wouldn't be so bad if enemies didn't constantly run and regenerate health, merely adding to how long it takes to finish a match.

So yeah, those are my two picks for the worst games, namely because it feels they were released somewhere in their alpha states.
