I'm beginning to understand the Nintendo thing now

Post by Scooter »

I was a Sega fanboy for years and then moved on to Sony and back to Sega when I belatedly bought a Dreamcast.

Recently I had a chance to make a sweet swap for some Genesis games for a complete, boxed N64. Some of the all-time greatest games, supposedly, are on the N64 so I thought it was time to try the big N. I got Super Mario, Legend of Zelda OoT, Legend of Zelda MM and Beetle Adventure Racing. I've spent the past few days playing Legend of Zelda OoT and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. What a well designed game!

I have a feeling I'll be playing it for a long time to come. Even with playing it all day and night today I'm certainly not that far along. Link is still a kid and there are things I can't do until I get into the future and play as the adult Link.

Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with the system. I'm not a big fan of the N64 controller though!

Love the system, but just threw it in the closet because of the controllers. I hate how loose the joystick gets, and hate replacing them only to wait for it to get loose again.

I just brought mine out of storage and gave a new permanant place in my entertainment unit yesterday. All this talk you lot have been going on with about the n64 these last few days have inspired me to dust the old girl off again.

One concern I have is one that I share with nick944 is the sticks. I'm considering pulling apart and cleaning out the grease inside one of my sticks and replacing it with graphite powder to see if maybe that makes it last a little longer.

Has anyone tried that ,and is it a good idea?

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

You can buy replacement sticks for just a few bucks. These aren't the least expensive I've seen, but give you an idea that they are readily available: http://www.ztnetstore.com/product_info. ... cts_id/211

I've had really good luck with my personal n64 sticks. I've never ground a stick to the point of floppy-ness. I have taken several broken controllers apart, ones that I've picked up second hand, and the sticks actually grind down until they either snap or are just so thing at a point that they don't connect to make any leverage. Be careful if you're going to disassemble the stick box. It's a real pain to put back together.

Do you have to use a tri-wing screwdriver to open the controller?

Great games. I was well surprised with how good Beetle Adventure Racing was.

Your in for a great time with those games.

The problem extends from the stick not using a floating mechanism like modern sticks use. It is always in contact with the exterior, and obviously wears down after prolonged use. The only way you can alleviate it is by taking apart and using some industrial grade lube. I used to put WD40 on mine but it would dry and then i'd have to re-apply. So it's just a temp fix, and high maintenance.
