what version are you playing? No one has said they have multiple versions and can compare difficulty. OS has variable difficulty - which is the arcade level? I've played both the Neo Geo MVS version and the Dreamcast version. I also played a bit of KOF'98:UM, but ended up moving on fairly quickly to KOF'02:UM.dsheinem wrote: what version are you playing? looking thru the manual for answers DSH. Apparently UM has the NEO GEO ROM on the disc as an alternate version as well. Nice!

I guess I'll offer up my favorite characters. I like Kyo, Ryo, Terry, Andy, Mai, and King. And Rugal it a bitch to take down, even on the DC version.
I should also note that one problem the KOF games suffer is that there are just too many characters (I know, heresy). It's very hard to choose a couple characters and focus on getting good with them. First, you have to have a team of 3 characters, so you have to divide your attention to learn multiple characters by default, and two, it can be difficult for a new player to suss all the various advantages and disadvantages in such a large roster of characters. So while I don't think this series is truly all that much more complex mechanically than the post-SSF2T Street Fighter games, it requires players to play more and engage in more trial and error to really figure out how everything fits together and to identify those characters that resonate most strongly with the player in question.

I popped in UM last night for a good two hours. Right now, I'm alternating between teams consisting of Iori, Kyo, Terry, and Robert. At this point, I just want to get used to those characters and get their move list, strengths, and weaknesses down.
I am TERRIBLE at this game though. I am barely able to make it through to the 3rd round at this point. I did manage to improve in the two hours, since I couldn't even finish the first match.
Anyways, I'm pleasantly surprised that the PS2 version of UM has progressive scan. In addition, it even has the original Neo Geo version of KoF 98. Definitely a very nice purchase and I can see myself wasting many more hours with this game.
Now, I just need to get myself a decent arcade stick for PS2, since the PS2 controller is definitely not cutting it.

Anyway as far a stick goes, I can personally recommend the Hori Tekken 5 stick. And it's not impossible to find at a good price.

I played the PS2 version tonight and did worse... I never made it through the first match. Maybe it was the crappy Naki minis stick controller, but I preferred playing the arcade (MAME) version on my cab.
I'm still not digging this too much because of the sheer number of characters and the fact that you only get one round to learn moves and have to learn moves for three characters.
I think I may give it one more try before I move on to another game.

I have '98 Unlimited Match, and with the Tekken 5 Stick, it is truly awesome. I like to turn-up my power-gauge, when learning new moves until I get them and it really helps.
