If somebody wants to goof around on GGPO with '98, reply or PM me. I'm not really good (particularly since I need to fix my stick...), so don't worry.

I could also help you learn the game since I've been into KOF for a while.

Man, that final boss exemplified everything I hate about playing Fighting games in single player - overpowered cheap moves coupled with the AI getting out of combos and pre-empting your moves in an impossibly accurate manner until you figure out the one move your character as which he never guards against for some reason, and you spam it until you win. It happened in street fighter, it happened in tekken, it happened in tatsunoko vs capcom and it happened in this. And yes, it probably is because I suck, but tbqh, it doesn't make me want to get involved in the genre - in fact, it consistently puts me off playing. I know I'm a long way from completion on tatsunoko vs capcom because I couldnt face the thought of having to fight that stupid boss over and over again.

My opinions of this game so far.....eh, its not bad, but I'm not impressed as of yet. It feels like a street fighter game to play, which to me is a bad thing, as I never got into that series. As stated earlier, I prefer my fighting games fast paced and a bit crazy.

I am impressed, but I'm still not very good. I honestly have trouble making it past the third round. Hopefully my fightpad will get here soon and hopefully that will help me at least a bit. Though I suspect I just need to learn more special moves and practice the shit out of these characters. I THINK I'm sticking with Mai, Terry and Choi.

KOF is a lot more offensive than SF is. It's all about rush-downs, mix-ups and evasion. SF seems more like sitting back and waiting for your opponent to make a mistake.

I've owned KoF Dream Match 99 on the Dreamcast for about a year now. I played it when I got it home. I thought it was pretty but was thoroughly stomped in almost every match. So I put it on the shelf-discouraged. I'm glad Together Retro is talking KoF this month - it has renewed my interest.
I watched the overview video and that helped a lot with the concepts. So I started the game up and I found after a couple of hours that it is very offense oriented, and jumping/rushing seems to play a big part. I like the evasion moves, it brings something new to the table other than guard. (Sometimes I even manage to evade an attack on purpose.) Guard is always my last thought in a fighter, but the evade action seems to work well, it's easier for me to remember and execute than a standard guard.
I've managed to beat 2 sets of opponents, only to fail on the third trio - but this is good progress for me.
I've played with Mary, Mai, Chizuru and Saisyu. I chose Mai because she's Mai, and the others just because I don't know KoF like other franchises. I don't have any real character preferences yet, but it's been fun. I love that there are so many fighters to choose from.
Are there advantages to choosing members of a specific team that exists in the KoF fiction? (I'm referring to the teams in the KoF storyline.)
After some time on KoF Dream Match 99 I also pulled out my KoF XI on the PS2. The art style is much more polished and "anime" looking. I like it.

KoF: 98 UM came in the mail last night, so I'll probably pop it in tonight and play a little. I'm gonna try to track down an arcade stick for the PS2.

I wish I could just get one that is compatible with PS3/PS2 (I saw a couple, but the quality is questionable.) I'll probably end up getting the Hori Tekken 5 stick, but there aren't that many arcade sticks on ebay in general.

Man, I'm amazed that everybody is having trouble with '98. The only teams I ever had trouble with in '98 were the Masters Team and the Kyokugen Team. Everybody else was pretty much gravy.

The only KOF I've ever played that I couldn't get past the third match was KOF'96. I pretty much had to use the Boss Team in order to beat that game.
