I play a multitude of different games, and am open to most any genre. However, over time I've noticed that I mostly excel in oldschool platformers. I can adapt to and beat games from other genres just fine, but 2D platformers are an area that I have a natural ability for. I also find that it's the genre that I can really tackle the most prominently difficult games in; I can blow through Mega Man, Castlevania, or even Ghosts 'n Ghoblins or Ninja Gaiden. Conversely I wasn't able to beat Devil May Cry on the third hardest difficulty setting, I'm generally mediocre at shooters, and I adapt very slowly to fighters.
Do you find that you have a notably higher level of natural ability in any particular genre?
Do you find that you excel in a particular game genre?
Re: Do you find that you excel in a particular game genre?
I do fine in 2D platformers as well. I'm a big fan of Mega Man games, and some of my friends have even called me crazy for beating them just to relax. I sometimes play MMX and MM2 just to see if I can come up with some weird order to do things in them. I recently completed Super Meat Boy as well. It was difficult, I died like 10,000 times (literally, according to the in-game count), but I did it at least.
I thought I was good at 2D fighters until I played Real Bout 2. Or Samurai Shodown 4. Anyway, I can still beat my friends...
I'm the laughing stock of FPS parties, however. I even have been playing some and enjoying, but I'm still crap.

I found that I am pretty awful at most if not all video games. Except for RPGs. Most of the time you don't need much skill for those
I'm not really sure why I play for the most part actually.

despite being an oldskool gamer, I excel at FPS's... which is kinda sad, since I hardly play them these days

If I am alone with no distractions, I can usually 1cc the hardest of shmups. Driving games with realistic physics are also my forté. With fighting games, I am so/so, not that great.

I can't play any type of game really well, and I'm content with that. I do like RPGs and platformers a bit more than other games so I have more experience in those genres, but that doesn't really count as a skill.

I suck at FPS's, but I don't play them anyway.
I do however have a natural tactitian sense and can really destroy any SRPG I come upon.

PC FPS. Console FPS I will lose most of the time - especially since there are rarely legacy controls, but a PC FPS I can usually hold my own in. Now there are exceptions, the guys who play CS all day I wont have a chance against (unless I sit and play CS all day - but I am more of a TFC guy).
