I know SNK games are usually tough, but twice in a row within the first hour I made it to (what I assume) is the last boss without continuing, and then just barely lost to him. This was with button mashing - I am sure once I lean some of the characters it will be even easier :) Am I naturally gifted, or is KOF '98 easier than some other SNK titles (Samurai Showdown series, Fatal Fury, etc.)?
Really? Hmm. Which version are you playing?

I'd say I do really well for like 3 rounds, but the AI seems to get increasingly cheaper as the rounds go on.

I'll get in on this one. :)

If my employer decides that its too risky to drive around town during a snow storm to fix cable tomorrow, then I'll probably download it and give it a go.

there's a stellar HG101 article here: http://hardcoregaming101.net/kof/kof.htm that tackles the entire series.

I'm still not certain about my third fighter. I'm not too pleased with Athena. I might use that Freddy Kruger rip-off guy. We'll see.

So I popped in '99 Dream Match for the Dreamcast and wasn't to familar with the game modes, so I played Single Game (I thought it was the Single Player) and it was just one on one matches akin to Street Fighter. I played as Kyo (I think, he was the guy at the top left corner) and had quite a bit of fun with it. The final guy Rugal sucks though. I was playing on the easiest setting (I'm not too good with fighting games, especially ones I never played before  ) and none of the other fighters really gave me much trouble, except for Rugal. The only way I won was because the roulette that shows up when you lose a fight knocked his energy to a third. 8)

Keep in mind, the game is meant to be played 3-on-3. Thus, when you do Single Game, you are fighting one-on-one with a boss that is meant to be fought three-on-one.

Anyway, mandatory watching for KOF Newbies. The Beginner's Incomplete Guide to KOF.

I've never settled on any particular team with KOF'98. I'm pretty well versed with just about every character, although there are a few who I don't like using. If it were crunch time and I had to go with the characters I'm most likely to use well, it'd be Iori, Clark and either Chris or Mary, depending on the matchup.

Well that would make it much much easier. I'll have to play it again in 3 on 3 mode :D

Call me old fashioned, but I have always liked the Fatal Fury Team.

If im going to mix I trade joe for King or Leona.

Andy might go out for Mai.

Terry stays on the team. Easily my favorite character. Love the rising tackle.

Im gonna join in on this one. I believe I have KOF 98 in my 100 in 1 cart for MVS. I usually like playing with Terry, Robert and the 3rd is always up in the air. I only really played KOF 95 a lot during the PS1 days as thats the only home conversion I had until years later.

Holy shit this game is hard. I'm playing the arcade version through FBA-XXX on Xbox. I played for about 3-4 hours yesterday. Made it past the first two battles fine, never got past the third. In fact, I only beat the first guy on the third battle once or twice. I took a bunch of notes on special moves, of course I can never execute them when I need them.

It's disheartening. I could credit feed all day and not get any further. Not sure what I could try differently to do better. It's like I hit a brick wall. What does one do in these situations?

I don't get it. I don't consider myself good at fighters at all, but I am having no problem with all the default settings getting to the last boss on the Orochi Saga version of the game, which I understand to be pretty much a straight arcade port. Can anyone knowledgeable speak to the differences in versions in terms of difficulty, arcade closeness, etc.? Maybe it is just the fact that I am using a stick?
