As you can see by looking at it there is a pile of gears that handle the speed (think of it as a single speed transmission that ramps the velocity of the lens as you progress across the disk from inner to outer, or vice versa).

You should be cleaning off those gears as much as possible making sure they spin nice and clean, you can even add some silicone lubricant to the gears, only a little... I wouldn't be surprised if you find some white crusty silicone lubricant on it from the past.

As for the rod, you need a light liquid lubricant. And again barely any at all. I don't remember what it is, but I always just used the lubricant I used on my old model trains. It's like the consistency of wd-40.

Now of course these parts are supposed to function well enough with out regular lubrication (and todays actually are designed to not be lubricated at all). But your SegaCD is now 18 years old, and it's going to need some babying in this department if it was treated poorly through out its life.
I had an Xbox that needed it's gears lubricated. I used vegetable oil instead of those fancy lubes you cited. Worked fine, though. Haven't had a single problem for the past two years now.

I have no idea what effects, if any, vegetable oil would have on gears/parts/etc. It's always better to use the proper tools for the job. Besides, I only had to put about $4 into supplies needed to do some maintenance on my SCD. Most things will be found around the house.

That will go rancid though since it is organic and can attract insects. I bet it probably doesn't smell so good in your Xbox especially with the warming and cooling.

It smells like plastic right now. And I haven't noticed any bugs crawling around near my Xbox. I think that if it was going to go rancid, it would have done it years ago.

i am high jacking the thread.

so why would my model 1 sega cd (thanks again hobie!) be able to read dungeon explorer and dark wizard without a problem - both are rpgs with decent size data rings - but won't read espn baseball? espn baseball has a small data ring compared to DE and DW and works fine on my other sega cd reading consoles.
if you took a shit, please put it back

Please do. I'm here to learn.

What condition is your disc in?
