Game Design Analysis

Hi Racketboy, I was wondering if anyone here knows of any documents or databases that specialize in design analysis.

Supposedly fans of the original Sonic The Hedgehog have written a very large document on the physics of the old games and why Sega should stick to the old engine. Something like this would be great.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The guys at Frictional Games (makers of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Penumbra series) maintain an ongoing blog with some really insightful ideas on game design in general, as well as in relation to their own games. They range from the theoretical and easy to understand to the technical and complicated.

You may want to check David Sirlin's stuff.

He has several articles about some aspects of game design, and often describes about talks given by other designers at the a Game Designer's conference.

His articles about how he worked to balance characters in Street Fighter II HD Remix were great. I love that he talks with the pro players for feedback and puts a lot of thought into how each character will interact with the others in terms of being able to counter, fake out, etc.
