The fact that you're playing them from a flash cart on a NES might put an idea in your head that it's no different than emulation, but in fact, you're playing it on real hardware so it's almost exactly like the real deal!

Maybe you wont wanna mentioned particular games, but I think you should at least mention the fact that the PowerPak is capable of running FDS games. And mention the differences that some games have. Like Metroid for example. Among other differences, the ability to save instead of using an annoyingly long password.

The only down side is that some FDS games used extra sound channels that the Famicom had. Games that use them, these sounds will be missing on a stock NES. All you have to do is add a single resistor between two pins on the bottom extension port on the NES and then you'll be able to hear all sounds from FDS games. This "mod" (if you wanna call it that) has no other effect.

By the way, how's the FF7 ROM? Did you try it yet?
Oh I'm completely aware of this, but the whole non commercial game thing meant that I kept FDS games out of the list as to my knowledge, there isn't any exceptionally well made FDS games that have received full translations or hacks that wouldn't be completely just as playable in Japanese. Still, I do plan on giving it a mention as Yume Kojo Doki Doki Panic Metroid and Zelda no Densetsu all deserve a mention.

As for the FF7 rom, I can't seem to get it working. I tried it even on my PSP's NesterJ emulator. Maybe you send me a bad dump?

Or maybe my NesterJ is outdated now. What's the latest version?

That FF7 ROM I sent you works fine. I've played it in NesTopia v1.39 (PC). I just tested it in Jnes v0.6 (PC) and it did not boot. Told me "Error: Mapper #163 unsupported." Noise said that he played it on his PSP, so maybe you have an older version?

I see what you're saying about the FDS games, it didn't fit your criteria for this article. Maybe write a dedicated article about FDS on the PowerPak then? I just think that the PowerPak's ability to play FDS games is amazing, but there's a severe lack of "Wow! Look at this!" articles about this on the internet. You know what I mean?

Alright updated my emulator and been playing FF7 FC for about two hours. This is clearly something I have to blog about. DO either of you guys have the real cart? I want to know if the board uses real EEPROMs and isn't just a series of gloptops. If its a real board, then would it be possible to have new chips burned for the English version put back on the original game's PCB?

That's the idea. I don't own a cart, but I wouldn't mind picking one up. I'm keeping an eye out for it. I'm curious myself.

But yeah, as long as it doesn't have glops than you'd be able to put the translation on it. Whether or not the translation hack has any bugs in it that will present on real hardware has yet to be determined. If it DOES have glops, that doesn't mean it's impossible. It probably would be, but there's still a chance you could wire in an EPROM. More over, I bet that cart uses all off-the-shelf parts. If that be the case, reproducing it would be easy. And by that I mean making NES carts.

I asked about it on Famicom World. No picture, but was given this info:

I opened my FFVII and saw two globs and three
ICs, transcribed below:

- SANYO LC3664BML-10 JAPAN 4GU1
- CY6264-70SC 9639 312158
- MX E013345 29LV160BTC-90 TAIWAN

The latter one is the 16Mb memory IC.

I'm guessing [hoping] the globs are for the mapper (possibly NES-10 as well?) and the proper chips are CHR, PRG and...SRAM?

What do you think Ziggy?
