Think about what Pokemon did to the image of the original GameBoy compared to its earlier years, when it had been the system of Tetris and Super Mario Land. The entire public perception about the platform's relevance and target demographic changed instantly. That's a definitive game.
um yeah... it's also a game that everyone associates WITH the system. So I'm pretty sure you're agreeing with me at this point. Maybe you've just confused yourself?

Nope. Pitfall was a cool game that came out on 2600 and is well known, but it didn't change the landscape. Nobody says "oh man, Atari 2600 was such a great platform for games about running and jumping over stuff!" It seems to me more like you're just confusing the terms "definitive" and "popular"

It seems to me that you're confusing noiseredux for a guy who wants to waste time on semantics.

If thisis wasting time on semantics, you've spent enough already that I guess it's an easy mistake.

Incidentally, high sales is another concept probably better off not confused with that of defining things. That could get really scary really fast if applied to other topics.

Hey Flamepanther...I think everyone else has reached a certain level of agreement. I also think everyone else is aware of your complaints. Let's call it a day and advance the conversation a bit? Personally, I am next to ignorant about the 2600 and I would like to see what I can learn from this thread.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

So first of all, which games do you thing Defined the history of the 2600.
I may run a poll later to determine the top picks (since there will probably be a lot of nominations)

Thanks!
In addition of memorable games, maybe mention of the game company Activision? All the great games including River Raid, Laser Blast and Pitfall. There were other companies but I think this particular one rings with Atari memories.

Also all the pack in comics and contest patches that were popular to collect of the day.

I agree that Pitfall is definitive. Everyone seems to remember that game. But more importantly, it took platformers from a static screen, to a scrolling screen. There may have been other platformers before it that did this, I'm not sure, but this is the first successful game to do it.
