If using one save / reload counts... I beat Metal Slug [1] this weekend on Wii Virtual Console.

I remember Incredible Universe carrying some dusty old Neo Geo fighters stacked in the shadow of the Pioneer Laseractive display. The pricetags on the games were simply unfathomable. And not growing up in or around arcades, this was a vein of the nouveau retro completely foreign to me until last Saturday.

The animations in the game are totally dope. Pooping pigs are just the beginning with each themed stage exuding a charm recognizable even to the most casual observer as Pure Metal Slug Mayhem. My favorite mission is the "village" stage (5?) where you trundle through town ultimately facing down Killdozer eXtreme.

It was sickly satisfying to find I knifed baddies when near, conserving bullets and savoring up close the final flash of life flickering to dark. Saving Private Jesus never got old and whatever that green 'S' weapon is gives me wood. Lastly, guess what. Not only can I jump over you, but I can aim down and shoot. Shoot straight through you.

Fallout:New Vegas

I made a independent New Vegas. I felt proud for a second. Now that I beat it, I can't play the game unless I get the DLC. The only question I have is: if I start a new game, can I transfer the level over?

Just beat Nelson Tethers: Puzzle Agent HD for the iPad, and I really, REALLY wish it was longer. Judging by the ending, I assume they are going to make it an episodic series, but that still doesn't excuse the fact that I beat it in well under 2 hours. Oh, well. The great presentation and dialogue certainly make up for its length.

Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril

I finally finished this one. Great game. It does a great job of being "Nintendo hard," without being excessively frustrating. Continue points are close enough together that you rarely have to go through a painful slog to get back to where you died. The sheer challenge of the game, though, means that you very well may die trying to get back to where you died. You'll still rarely be more than 90 seconds away from where you respawn.

I played on normal difficulty, with a regular controller (with one exception). A turbo controller will make the game significantly easier. In fact, I did have to use a turbo controller on the third boss because she indicates which attack is coming by changing color, and I'm colorblind. In the boss battles, you really do need to know which attack is coming before it is on-screen, so this was a huge pain for me.

I got the "good" ending. I may go back and try to beat the last boss again to get the less-good ending.

I enjoyed Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril, and strongly recommend it to those who enjoy a good platforming challenge. It's really hard, but only very rarely is it cheap.

Resistance Retribution - PSP

I found this one to be very enjoyable. The production values were top notch for a PSP game and once again Sony Bend clearly demonstrates that they understand the platform that they are working with. The controls worked pretty well for the most part. I had some annoyances when it came to switching to weapons and moving at the same time, but nothing catastrophic. Overall, it was definitely worth the money ($8.99) and I felt pretty satisfied with the content.

Bionic Commando: Elite Forces (GBC)

The game holds up well on either a GBA or GC Game Boy Player. Nice animation, and a solid action title that does justice to the original. Biggest downside is the small screen limiting your view... but that's expected for a GBC game.

Time well spent, even if the final boss was a bit too easy.

I played this last year and really liked it too - some of the later levels were genuinely difficult, though. Resistance is a vastly underrated series in my opinion - all the games have been top notch.

Ecco the Dolphin, Sega CD version. Talk about quite a majestic experience if you really get into it, the CD OST really took it to the next level and it was the first time I had ever beaten the game, after playing it off and on for 10 years. I definitely plan to hit up Tides of Time soon. The first game was absolutely no pushover at all though, and was pretty rewarding and satisfying clearing it... I have heard 2 is quite tough as well, so hopefully luck is on my side again!
