RTS with most variety

Post by Tercoil »

Hi everyone, i've been hankering for some good rts games as of late as it is one of my favourite genres. I've been playing through warcraft 3, starcraft, dawn of war and even more obscure ones like homeworld 2 and warlords battlecry 3 and it got me wondering.

What rts has the most different playable races or factions? the most i've found is warlords battlecry 3 which has 16 different races which makes it a lot of fun to just keep coming back and trying new things. So what game has the most variety among teams? and also whats your favourite rts in general?

P.S.
anyone who would like a game of warlords battlecry 3 gimme a shout as none of my friends can be bothered installing the game and hamachi and such haha :)

The problem with that advice is that the "quit it" portion of the process becomes much more complicated after the "hit it" maneuver has been completed. Much easier to "quit it" before all else.

Dont know if this counts but WC3 has litterally hundreds of custom games. These range from veriations of the standard game with new races (Gnolls, draenai, naga ect) to first person shooters. I heard some patch screwed up all of them though so i have no idea what sort of custom games remain.

Otherwise you wont find to much variation in any RTS as the slight differences are usually massive in number and key to gameplay. For example Halo wars has only 6 leaders od which 3 have one set of units and 3 have the other. However each one has so many slight differences from the other that the player(you) have to use them to the fullest to defeat the oponent.

Finally DO NOT buy Age of Empires 3 if you want variety. It's a beautiful game and very fun in single player, but the multiplayer is simply who can get artillery first. Colonial age whilst interesting, had very very simple warfare. Bigger gun=victory.

The first two Age of Empire games had quite a few factions (I'd say 15+ as a rough estimate), never played the third one though.

Look into the Total War series, that's all I have to say.

Rise of Nations has quite a few different playable sides. And I second Age of Empires 2, but add The Conquerers expansion pack.

haha yeah i have played the total war series extensively and they are great games. but im looking for more traditional rts for the moment. Hmm i havn't played rise of nations before, i'll have to check that out. Age of Empires 2 is one of my all time favourite games, i've spent countless hours on that game hahaha :)

What's wrong with AOE3? :(

I played countless hours on that game, including multiplayer. Not only do you have over 10+ countries to player as, each have their own perks and weaknesses, not to mention the additions of hometown shipments/bonus card, it added tons of variety in my opinion.

Available at target or bestbuy for $30, comes with two expansions.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?
