For me I'm done with anything new that comes out in terms of hardware. I have such a huge backlog of games for the GBA, NDS and PSP that I don't really care for anything else, no matter how shiny it looks.

I'm done with consoles too. I'm quite happy with Xbox 360 and Wii. Don't think much will change for a long time to warrant purchases.

In all honesty though the largest leaps that I've witnessed are from Gen 5 to Gen 6. The Gameboy color to the GBA was more significant that the NES to SNES.

That too but I was referring to portables comparing it to consoles. Being that the PSP2 is somewhat capable to running PS3 graphics I figured why not make a likely comparison. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I'm assuming that the PSP2 will have a similar sort of composite video cable like the original psp did, so that factor of screen size is negligible. Also, I've heard claims that the PSP2 has the roughly the same graphics capabilities as a PS3, and I doubt that the visual difference between 7th and 8th generation console graphics is going to be that great.
The way I figure it is, if your happy with your current collection of portables, why bother upgrading? Personally, I'll be waiting a good 1 to 2 years before I even think about upgrading. I mean, I already have a huge backlog of awesome NDS and PSP games that I really want to finish. Not to mention 1st gen hardware usually sucks and will most likely be upgraded a year, year & 1/2 after release. By that time, the 3DS & PSP2 will be cheaper, better built and have a great & cheaper game library to choose from. I'll you from what I know so far though, the 3DS will be the direction I'll be taking when I do upgrade.

I'm actually pretty impressed by handhelds right now. I have played four games in 2011 so far. Three of them console games and one DS game(Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Sonic 4, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin). The DS game outclasses them all. So handhelds can certainly hold their own against consoles and the convenience factor they have is just awesome. I also like that there is an effort for handheld games to be DURABLE. PSP UMDs have the plastic case and the DS just uses cartriges.

I think handhelds are definitely a viable alternative to any console on the market right now

For the games, and for the extra processing power.

I agree, that the graphics aren't really a leap this generation, but for me, all of the features for the PSP2 seem gimmicky to me. I looked at the uncharted video on gamestop and they have features such as climbing with the touch pad on the back and by touching the screen, using the gyroscope to swing, but in all honesty. It doesn't look like anything necessary, but a way to look goofy in public.

Maybe I'll get a new hand held in the future, after the prices come down, but I'm not holding my breath at the moment. I really enjoy my retro collection, and rediscovering the Sega Saturn ATM.
My Console Collection: 3DS (JPNS), Dreamcast (US and JPNS), Genesis, N64 (US and JPNS), iPod Touch, NES, Xbox, Famicom, Colecovision, Super Famicom, Neo Geo AES, Sega Saturn, DS LL (JPNS), Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Portrait of Ruin was solid but Dawn of Sorrow trumps it. Check it out if you have not already.

I'm actually waiting a good 2-3 years before buying an 8th gen system. (3DS, NGP, N6, 720 and PS4). Mainly because I want some better hardware, there's a crapton of games left buy this gen, and last, and because prices drop and more games are available.
