How would you feel about a really controversial game decision? I'm talking about in game choices.
Stuff that will make you stop, think, but in the end you don't want to take either option. Like killing a kid in order to save your own child, or playing the role of a rape victim and choosing to either fight it or accept it, even though your choice might not have the impact you expect it to.
In general how would you feel if interactive entertainment stopped being just games and started being more art? Making you think about stuff that makes you unconfrontable, making you feel bad, making you think in general.
How would you feel if they rewarded the unethical solution, and doing the ethical thing would be a lot harder and not provide any or very little benefit?
And how long do you think will it take the society, who thought that GTA was a murder training program, to accept that they are more than games, that they are art?

You mean a game with an ACTUAL moral choice system that isn't just GOOD CHOICE and EVIL CHOICE? We really do need more ambiguity in things like this.
Society in recent years has finally accepted gaming as entertainment that isn't just for kids. I think it's only a matter of time before they actually respect it as an equal to film, music, books, etc.And how long do you think will it take the society, who thought that GTA was a murder training program, to accept that they are more than games, that they are art?

They already do reward unethical situations depending on the game.ZeroAX wrote: How would you feel if they rewarded the unethical solution, and doing the ethical thing would be a lot harder and not provide any or very little benefit?

GTA is a game that I still haven't played funnily enough to me being ethical and doing the right thing is something that is a part of me so having it in games well it depends upon the situation of how real does it make it feel.
I mean if it feels like a game then it can be thought of as exciting but if it feels real I to the extent I find difficult in defining reality and fiction then I can 100% say now that it's not something that I would want to infest society.

Well, yes and no. In my rape example, fighting back might make the character feel better for herself afterwards, but it might make the rapist damage her even more badly (physically). On the other hand not fighting back, might mean she escapes without any damage, but her soul might be more scarred (up to the writer/player to decide?).AppleQueso wrote:You mean a game with an ACTUAL moral choice system that isn't just GOOD CHOICE and EVIL CHOICE? I don't know, I just want to see less mainstream dilemmas in games.
Hm, I'm not sure about that. First is the fact, that even though reading graphic novels has been accepted, collecting them, or talking about them to a girl, hasn't been accepted in the same manner as films or books.Society in recent years has finally accepted gaming as entertainment that isn't just for kids. Also playing video games is perhaps the only activity that brands you. You are a "gamer". Am I also a "watcher" or a "reader"?
Though mind you, those are faults of the industry and not of society. If they started making more unisex games, or even more female oriented games (and that doesn't mean ponies and pink), and if they stopped calling out to "gamers" in their commercials, perhaps it would become as accepted as film.
On the other hand, I really wish more companies would call it interactive entertainment, and not video games.

Ask any comic book fan how their subculture is treated nowadays vs 15 years ago even.ZeroAX wrote:Hm, I'm not sure about that. So basically, you think they should only be viewed as a medium for entertainment, and not art. Nothing thought provoking.msimplay wrote: I mean if it feels like a game then it can be thought of as exciting but if it feels real I to the extent I find difficult in defining reality and fiction then I can 100% say now that it's not something that I would want to infest society.

Whilst it would be amazing. It would sell worse than dried urine, unless it was a FPS with generic online play

I could seriously see the indie game community putting out really experimental releases like ZeroAX is describing. You won't see that stuff in the mainstream.

If marketed differently, packaged differently, distributed differently I believe they could sell. Make them short games, without expensive graphics, package them in classy hard paper, use a book like format for the cover, with some "classy" extras inside, sell them at bookstores, giftstore and in general try to get away from the "gamestop" feel of retailing games (aka, no game deserves more than a year on our store, and what will come the next year will replace this year's edition)Frizz.Meister wrote:Whilst it would be amazing. I always thought this was a funny point. It's not very stimulating to choose an option when the first one is "Save three orphans from burning in a fire and build a shelter for the homeless" and the second is "Burn down that school and let a rottweiler loose in a daycare".AppleQueso wrote:You mean a game with an ACTUAL moral choice system that isn't just GOOD CHOICE and EVIL CHOICE?
