Realistically, if they did this:
A) GameStop and many other retailers would be pissed and likely stop carrying their hardware, if not also their software.
B) Consumers would get pissed and buy either resell-able 360 versions or cheaper PC versions of the same game - or flat-out not buy the games at all.
C) The CD Keys would get cracked, possibly within the week of the games releasing, allowing pirates to get their hands on it with only a small obstacle in the way.
D) It would encourage many legitimate consumers to resort to pirating the games just so they wouldn't have to deal with the draconian DRM scheme, much like has happened with Ubisoft.
E) Consumers lacking online connections would be even harder screwed, basically being unable to play because of an inability to authenticate.
Either Sony finds another solution, or they are metaphorically blowing their brains out. I can take that they thought about it, but I imagine they thought about it for 15 minutes before they realized it wouldn't be worth the hassle.
Who's ready for serial keys on the PS3!
Re: Who's ready for serial keys on the PS3!
I am already boycotting Sony but let's assume I wasn't for a minute here..
If they did implement serial keys, it would piss me off and there is a chance I would consider piracy or just not playing PS3 games at all. Punishing your paying customers because some people choose to pirate games doesn't make sense. This kind of shit never works.

Serial keys, while annoying, wouldn't be completely horrible unless they were non-transferable and had to be verified online. If they did it the way PC games did in the early 2000's, then it wouldn't be too bad.

I'm with 7k in that I highly, highly doubt this unconfirmed report has any credibility. There's simply no conceivable advantage to taking this course of action.
