Best SNES Dungeon Crawler?

Post by 4ppleseed »

Hi guys, looking for a really good Dungeon Crawler to play. Either something that really defines the genre perfectly or something that's really interesting and turns it on its head.

Any recommendations, greatly appreciated :D

Are we talking 'dungeon crawler' as in Dungeon Master (SNES) and/or Double Dungeons (PCE),
or 'dungeon crawler' as in Final Fantasy III, Lufia, or Breath of Fire (all SNES)?

When I hear the term I think of something like Fatal Labyrinth for the Genesis. Is there something like that for the SNES?

Dungeon Master for the SNES

I think there was a sequel for it as well, but on the Sega CD..

You might also want to look into Drakkhen. It's an SNES first-person dungeon crawler, but the view is positioned behind the party as they travel.

I had a lot of fun with Arcana for SNES back in the day. My brother recently beat it again.

There's also the port of Eye of the Beholder:

I'm not sure how it compares to the other platforms it was released on, but you might be interested in it.

Orbitus might also interest you:

There were also ports of Might & Magic II (not in the US I think) and Might & Magic III (only in the US), as well as several Wizardry games, though most didn't get a US release from what I've read. Hope this helps.

The 2 roguelikes are in Japanese, but have been translated. Since it's my favorite type of dungeon crawler:
